Post subject:  Looking for education, here...
I've wondered just how the coach/GM relationship works. I don't know if this is a chicken-or-the-egg question, and I'm honestly looking for an education (not a fight ;) ).

I always thought that the coach worked for the GM, who could hire/fire him, but beyond that I'm stumped. Does the coach tell the GM 'hey, we need this kind of player'? Does a coach say 'I need player X,Y or Z' and tell the coach to go get him? Or does the GM decide that the bottom line needs to be improved...or maybe someone offers a trade that he likes & does without paying attention to the coach?

I have always thought that coaches are at the mercy of the GM, probably because the coach is the first one to go. Leaving our current situation out of it, do coaches get screwed over by GMs in player trades?

I'm not exactly asking for the Darcy/Lindy relationship to be dissected but I would like to know how this works on paper & in real life.

In the HBO series of 24/7, the Capitals coach at the time and their GM would discuss players on their team and what they could do.

Same thing with Pittsburgh, but that was more about injuries at the time.

Honestly, I highly doubt anyone outside the organization actually knows how this works.

I've read plenty of articles and quotes that lead me to believe that Ruff and Regier work in tandem about player evals and acquisitions. They put their opinions together with scouting, but Regier has a final say if there's a stalemate, but I don't think many moves have been made unless there's a consensus. His decisions had sometimes been limited by ownership restrictions - sometimes over length of contract, sometimes money. Regier also, of course, takes on the actual duties of calling and discussing trades and signings with other GMs and player agents.

The decisions about who to trade away and who to acquire though has always included Ruff as much as anyone. It's not like that with most other coach/GM tandems that haven't been together as long as they have, but after ALL these years Ruff/Regier are a team. BUT...Regier doesn't have anything to do with coaching and on-ice performance, so I think Lindy shoulders more of these problems.

Its gotta be a function of the relationship between the two. I'd think at this point L and R basically act as one, at least thoroughly discussing players and what they want.
If there is a GM looking to totally rebuild they might be using a new coach, and there might be almost no relationship, and he'd just acquire the players he wants, with no coach input.
But this is all speculation.

I think these two are joined at the hip; but to answer your question, it's quite possible that a coach and GM have a different vision. It's not impossible that the combination of their different views is detrimental, either. I think you need a balance of unity and competition between the two. When a coach and GM get too used to sniffing each others butts, it gets stale fast. Iow, two intelligent guys blending diverse ideas is far better than 2 guys breaking their arms patting each other on the back over the same ideas.
