What is up with the +/- from tonight? We outscore the Islanders 3-0 and yet as a team we are only +5. Vanek has a goal and assist and has an Even +/-? How exactly does that work

+/- only applies to even strength goals. Buffalo had one (Gaustad) and two PP goals.

What 1980 said.

There are exceptions - I believe that a shorthanded goal results in a - for every player on the ice for the PP team and a + for the shorthanded team's players on the ice.

Powerplay goals do not give a + to players on the ice or a - for the goal scored against.

Even strength goals give +'s and -'s depending on who scored and what not.

Shorthanded goals will give Plus and Minus to the respective players.

Empty Net goals also Give A plus or a Minus.

Plus/minus is a very misseading stat sometimes, it usually doesn't say much if a team is an offensive power house.

It all depends if the goals were scored even strength.

The reason many of our players are pluses right now is because we've been so good on 5-on-5 play, we have been outscoring opponents even strength more often than not this year.

Always good at even strength... Without a power play, though, they will get nowhere in the postseason.
