Ryan Miller, as a member of the NHL's competition committee, has the ear of some very important people in hockey's hierarchy. He also has an acute feel for his fellow players, knows which topics they want discussed.

He says the words aren't reaching the ears. The general managers' meetings this week offered further proof.

We need to be careful not to reduce the game to something less than what we have grown to love.

At the same time players have to resume respecting the welfare of one another again.

This is happening in part because of the following, IMHO:

-Instigator rule.
-Visors and light weight; but very solid eqipment.

To deter this, the league needs to take out the instigator rule. Make the equipment less like armour, without reducing the protection (Don Cherry has illustrated this on HNIC several times). Penalize any avoidable head shots - but be careful not to punish hard clean hits. Fine line, really, though, as many clean but solid hits result in attacks.

Maybe the NHL should hold a yearly seminar about keeping your head up.

I think it all comes back to the instigator.

Agreed, I think TC finally got the "heads up" about that. From what I've seen, it seems that Connolly isn't carrying the puck with his head down as much or at all anymore
