An Olympic assignment — and the accompanying compression of the NHL schedule to accommodate a three-week break — really changes the dynamic for Miller's season. He's going to have to back off on practice and backup Patrick Lalime will need to play more games.

We'll have to see IF and how this plays out....

Its had a enough time to heal...ankle injuries are tough to recover from, but 5 months should be adequate time for that injury to heal.

OK, so does this mean Ruff will finally stick to his plan of playing his backup a few games apart? I hope so, because it'll be easier to absorb those losses than a bunch in a row down the stretch when Miller is worn out or injured.

It had better mean that Lindy lays off his starter...

God, let's hope he doesn't get hurt again. That was brutal...

And I loved when he said this in the interview:

"I know I'm a good goalie already. Competitively, I want to keep pushing it up there so I'm an elite goalie," he said. "There's no question people talk about my game at the top of the league and I want to keep pushing that. Coming through frustrations and things that don't go your way are part of being that kind of a goaltender. Just another part of the journey. We'll see how it plays out."

And may he never be injured again.

Additionally, please no more playing him 15+ games in a row, ever. Thx, Lindy.

Past two seasons have been just lovely in the goaltending department...

meh, im not sure miller tired out last season, so im not positive lalime needs to be called on THAT much more. the team played scared in front of lalime last season. so afraid to give up a chance that miller would usually smother, that lalime would struggle on, that they abandoned the rush for the most part.

Strange but Miller "talking cocky" doesn't exactly mean Miller is sounding cocky, and he is one of the only hockey players that could make these comments without sounding like a jackass.

He plays "balls to the wall", and even though he isn't perfect (each and every night) it's his ass on the line - It's not like he doesn't shoulder the load.

The team relies on his giving 110%, to win - He's by no means "out of line" when he speaks his mind. He delivers, with everything he's got. And has earned the right to offer his perspective.

I wish more players on this team had this quality.

i disagree with the blame being soley on ruffs shoulders for his handling of goaltenders. thibault could not be counted on to give an NHL calibre start in 07-08. the team was in the thick of a playoff race, and lindy couldnt give away a game. wasnt his fault his backup was thibault. and lalime sure didnt play that much better last season. lindy has had very bad backups outside of biron. remember when the very capable, steady, backup bob essensa shit the bed for the sabres?

What pisses me off about Lalime is, when he kicked so much ass as the Blackhawk's backup, the team was playing their regular game. The Sabres shit the bed in front of Lalime, and that's a big reason he couldn't win a game. That game against the Ducks was a PERFECT example of this point.

well, lalime couldnt be counted on to make the big save miller usually did. so the team played back on its heels. it went both ways.

I'm just glad to hear it come straight from his mouth because I'm so sick of fans who are so blindly biased against him that they can't recognize his capabilities - whether they hate him or not.

You have a point...there were certainly times where Lalime could have been better, but I mean should we really have expected to make the big saves like Ryan Miller did? He's a backup goalie, not a top-tier goalie like Miller. Of course there are times when a backup goalie can go out there and be a difference-maker, but not nearly as much as a goalie like Miller can. I think Miller's injury just exposed how this team can rely on him too much sometimes and how important he truly is to the team.

no, he shouldnt be expected to match miller. but sense he wasnt expected to match him, the team played cautious, lawyer ball.

Hopefully the team plays well enough this season to earn Miller some rest.

It all comes down to how well Lalime plays.

If he is giving up 3+ goals per start.........

I wonder how much blame Corsi and Regier should get for the goaltending issues over the years?

Lalime looks like he's swimming in his pads when he plays.

I sometimes wonder if he'd be better of with smaller, lighter equipment.

He looks like he's swimming in large part to the fact that he straps his pads EXTREMELY loose.

It's crazy how much slack he has on his straps.
