So I was sitting around thinking if Tomas Plekanec is a realistic acquisition. Obviously, Montreal wants him back and given their success, he might want to go back there. Not only that, he's gonna want a lot more than 2.75M. But I'm thinking if we can somehow snatch him up and move out Connolly for Horton our top two lines will look like this:
Vanek-Plekanec-Horton
Ennis-Roy-Pominville
This, of course, is merely what if's and conjecture. I just wanted to hear some thoughts and see if anyone else thinks this is possible.

It would make for great line combos no doubt...but I kinda hate Plekanec :)
That's realistic though. I always though that if Darcy was serious about the straight up Connolly for Horton deal, he would have something like this in the works as well.

I don't know, Plekanic seems kinda streaky.

Why not aim higher? Sure Plekanec is a consistent 20+ goal scorer but he's also going to get 5+ million. Wouldn't you rather spend another 2 million on a true franchise center like Marleau? He's a much BIGGER forward and he's only a few years older at age 30.

I don't think another marginally skilled forward who is on the small side is what the Sabres need right now. Aim high or hold your fire.

Marleau is in no way going to be able to live up the ridiculous cash someone throws his way, nor will we able to match said ridiculous amount of cash. Marleau will not be a Sabre, that much we can all count on.

Exactly why he never crossed my mind. Some other franchise with the cap room and the money to spend will be all over him with anywhere from 7-9 million dollars a year.

Exactly. Marleau could not have landed in a better situation with this year's free agency, with the exception of Kovalchuk, there is literally nothing else out there at his level. Any other season he'd be look at 6-7 mil per but you're right someone dumb will throw $9 mil a season at him.

There's no way he gets more than 7.5.

I think people said that neither Briere nor Drury would get north of $6M per prior to July 1st a few years ago.

Never underestimate the stupidity of at least one NHL GM with money to burn.

I wouldn't be shocked if Marleau were to get a deal that averaged out to $8M+.

$9M+ would surprise me a bit. But, I won't say it's out of the realm of possibility.

Exactly I remember hearing ATL was offering Soupy more than 8 mill a year to play there.

And that will definitely factor into the offers that Marleau gets.

A team like Atlanta (or Florida or the Islanders) would have to pony up a lot more money than a more competitive team that would be attractive for non-monetary reasons.

For instance, could the LA Kings entice Marleau to move south to replace Frolov on a good, young, up and coming team for less than what some other teams could offer?

Quote:
Marleau, who would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, has agreed to a four-year deal worth $6.9 million per year, while Pavelski, a restricted free agent, has also agreed to a four-year contract, one that will pay him $4 million per year.

Lost in all the Marleau talk, you all know that Plex re-signed in Montreal, right?

I did post it, in the NHL Talk sub-forum the moment it was announced.
