That's a pretty healthy assumption.

It is getting time for those guys to get their first stints in the NHL. If they have played well in Portland, then they should be able to get better with the front stage.

T.J. Brennan : 1.5 seasons out of juniors.

Drew Schiestel : 1.5 seasons out of juniors.

Alex Biega : .5 seasons out of college hockey.

But yet they're somehow 'ready' to make the jump to the NHL and play night in and night out?

That's not how it works.

IMHO, we really need to keep/acquire guys with NHL experience, to teach & lead the young guys. Without a bunch of guys who know how to work hard, play hard, you get tentative play. I really believe that that was the worst fallout from the loss of Drury & Briere; our young forwards (Staff & Poms) were left rudderless. Let's not make that mistake again. Oh wait- we just did with the D.

I'm done hoping to improve with AHL call-ups. There are no Portland prospects on defense that will be impact players. If we want a Cup caliber d-corps we need more blue chippers like Myers, or to go out and get them through trade or free agency. Unfortunately the forward lines are thin and there's no real good UFAs this summer after Brad Richards. That will jack his price up even higher than the ridiculous amount that free agency would normally give him. Otherwise Tomas Fleischmann might be a decent option for less if he gets healthy.

The pending UFA d-men are a better group though, so replacing Rivet and possibly Montador should not be a problem. Re-signing Montador is important not just because he's been good, but he's a rare right hander that we'll be short of (only Myers). With any luck Sekera and Weber will improve enough to make them solid 2nd or 3rd pair guys.

Agreed. Two complete seasons in the minors, specifically in the AHL, should be sufficient. Brennan, Schiestel, and Biega will not be up for another complete season at the earliest. maybe 2012-2013.

Sorry, shedoesntgetit, you did not get it this time.

We have kept and acquired guys with NHL experience. It is having the right NHL experience to feed down to the younger guys. I doubt our front office has succeeded in its numerous attempts to bring those guys here.

Two seasons in the AHL is not sufficient for most NHL defenseman.

For defensemen, three years is reasonable unless someone is really good or really bad.

Unfortunately, we cannot set the time for the progression of any specific player. Only the player and his organzation can decide that.

keep Montador. He has been one of our best D-men and his pairing with Leopold has been solid all season. Plus Monty has been one of the better shot blockers this season.

Tim Connolly can go.

meh. i'd almost ok with montador leaving. if by the deadline were not in a serious hunt for the playoffs, i'd say shop him. hes on pace to have the best season, statistically, of his career i'm sure he'd get a pretty decent return for us right now. plus, we have so many defenseman in our system that i don't think it'd hurt us to lose him. brennan, schiestel, and biega could all easily come up and play.

so because we have a lot of defensemen, its ok to get rid of one of our best d-men this season? Unless it's a really good deal, Montador should not go anywhere. Him and Leo have given us a very solid pairing for most of this season and you don't throw that away unless its for something really good that you just can't turn down. I do believe it would hurt us to lose him right now. You can't just assume that our young D-men in the system are just going to be able to come up and perform well.

Is Connoly still on the team? Seriously, is he actually still taking shifts in the NHL? I can't recall seeing him on the ice for what seems like months. Sarcasm aside they should dump him, Neidermeyer, Grier, and Rivet for draft picks and a decent heavy weight enforcer (something they need to get the crowd going).

Montador is going to get 3+ million this summer, I think he's worth it but I would not make him untradable at all. If they can get good return value then by all means move him and try to find somebody in the summer.

Eklund reporting a Calgary Buffalo deal could be in the works
To Calgary
Connolly
Stafford
Rivet
Pick

To Buffalo
Tanguay
Glencross
Regher
Conditional Pick

Thoughts

TBH I dont mind it. Dont like losing Staff but Regher would be a great pick up. It would also allow us to move Monty for a good pick or prospect. If we dont land Regher I say we re-sign Monty for 2 years.

Tanguay = Connolly

I don't know much about Glencross at all.

Regher is GREAT.

Regher is GREAT.

Glencross is a bottom six energy guy who's on pace for 20 goals or just under.

He's already basing this one on the fact that their's new ownership, even though the deal hasn't closed yet.

He's so bad.

outside of this being Eklund.....why would Quinn make a trade like this at the last minute when he hasn't for years? Doesn't make sense and won't happen.

At this point, LQ won't approve anything without Pegula's OK, even though he hasn't taken control yet.
