Would you trade Vanek and Stafford in a package deal to Edmonton for the 1st overall pick. This package deal would not include our late 1st round pick, but Vanek, Stafford and additional in a package? If you would, what would your package look like and who would you take 1st overall? |

You know, I have no idea what I would do if offered with that package or not. In all honesty, I don't think Vanek is anywhere near a problem to us, Stafford I would say dump him to the highest bidder since Ennis, or Kennedy fills his spot better than he does already. But Edmonton still isn't guaranteed that first overall pick. |

If we had of taken Edmonton's 4-1st round picks for Vanek, we could have easily traded for Stamkos, though. |

Supposedly Edmonton is offering Ales Hemsky, Dustin Penner and willing to accept a horrid contract for the 2nd overall pick. They want both Hall and Seguin. |

Linky would be nice, but hypothetically: If Edmonton wants to blow them, then eat a load of cap for them, who knows. Gimme Hemsky, Penner, and eat all my mistakes for the #2 pick. Let me think about it. I'm sure if you ask Mr. Chara, he'd be happier with the "now" approach. I also think it's too risky for a team to gamble their future on the #1 and 2 picks unless it's Crosbaby and Ryan. |

Obviously losing their biggest scoring threat has hurt them. Penner fits their system and Hemsky is an elite talent and they still keep the other picks they got in the Kessel trade. I would do it if I was Chiarelli. Who would be the bad contract though. Timmy Thomas? |

Why in the world would you trade Thomas Vanek now? I'm curious to be honest; because right now I have a totally different logic on why we shouldn't move Vanek. 4 main reasons: 1. His offensive production is down this year, so his value is down, especially with a big contract 2. He's improved his defensive play drastically over seasons prior 3. He's one of the few guys in the NHL save for Holstrom and Getzlaf that can control the front of the crease on the PP 4. What kind of message does that send to the team? Especially after sticking with other players like Connolly, Tallinder, and Lalime after they've all had off years, or missed time due to injuries. I think looking deeper into it, moving Vanek this off season would be a bad move. If you want to move him, wait until he's a little older, and your "future" stars like Ennis and Kassian have had a chance to develop into the dynamic players they could, and should become. |

Not a chance that I make this trade. Plus players with Vanek's offensive talent don't exactly grow on trees, and like it or not, he CAN backcheck, and he is damn good at it. 20 goal scorers with Stafford's paycheck don't either. |

People didn't catch on to what was taking place in last nights game, that is obvious. The attack into the offensive zone was completely different most shifts. The tip drill employed while Vanek is in the line up wasn't employed nearly as much and the offensive rushes were at a much faster pace than we have seen in quite some time. As for Stafford, he has achieved 20 goals only 1 season and over 40 points only 1 season, that doesn't make him a 20 goal scorer. Oh, and in case anyone missed it, with this new type of offensive attack style, they generated the same amount of scoring chances, spent more time in the offensive zone than they have in almost any game this season and back checking and defensive hockey didn't suffer in the least bit. Sorry, but I'm calling a spade a spade on this one, the team looked much better offensively. |

I'd deal Vanek and Stafford for the top pick. That would free up a lot of cap space to tweak some things moving forward and I think that either of the top pick options will top out as better players than Vanek in the next few years. But, I can't see the Oilers wanting anything to do with that kind of a deal right now. |

Taking the first overall pick in this year's draft is like picking between Alexander Daigle and Patrick Stefan...there are no "franchise" talents in this years draft. And the free agent market isn't exactly bursting with 1st line talent either, the only real first line player on the market this year, that will be available is Patrick Marleau, and we're going to have about 7M free in cap already this year. I wasn't aware that being 1st in the division, and 3rd in the east means we should deal two core guys for a rebuild... |

Not to mention a guy that can play the pp, pk, in front of the net, has playoff experience and has come up huge in the playoffs before. |

They sure did Squanto, Rask may have stopped break aways on Roy and Pomminville, but the real issue I was alluding to wasn't singularly on the score sheet. I was watching that game closely and the way the entered the zone, back checked in the nuetral zone, dug in the corners and along the boards and positioned themselved on the forecheck was clearly evident in last nights game. The pace was much, much quicker than it has been in quite some time. Hence the reasoning behind this post. Its not saying Vanek or Stafford or better or worse players than these kids from Portland, its merely a difference in style of play. I like the fast paced, up beat tempo the kids put on last night. And it didn't come at the expense of defense. |
