Brian Rolston is a prime candidate to be moving from New Jersey now that they've signed Kovalchuk. Should the Sabres be interested? He hasn't been very productive the past two years, and while he does make about $5M against the cap, his scoring troubles could be attributed the Devils' defensive-minded scheme of things. Before he came back to New Jersey, he was a 30-goal scorer. Just something to think about, I guess.

Ehhh he's 36 at this point and the Sabres are in need of badass scoring talent, not past-their-prime players.

Also, anytime anyone is described as a post XX-goal scorer or had XXX amount of points in the past, if the only years they managed to accomplish this are 05/06 or 06/07, immediately discount that production (The Jonathan Cheechoo Rule)

He's a more offensively talented Rob Nieds (I say that because I don't know how to spell his last name), IMHO.

It's just something to think about. He'd be a good vet to have, IMO.

I would take him.

This would be a wonderful stop gap between Kassian and what we have now. Rolston is capable of adding 30-40 points per season, awesome 2 way ability, and is a solid PK man as well. Not to mention a former captain, and a highly respected player in the league.

Even if you disregard the 05-07 stats, hes still shown he can score at a high level through out his career. Although I'm not sure why post lock out stats are to be disregarded, it's just when officials did their job, instead of the shit they miss now.

Rolston has scored over 50 points 9 times in this NHL career, and is capable of playing at a high level still. Hell he scored 20 goals last year, and 3 points in 5 playoff games. If NJ wants to rid themselves of him, and he wants to play 2 years here, I'd be all for it. Thats an expensive contract to be stuck with next year if he doesn't play 2 years here though.

They're to be disregarded because the environment many players poster their careers numbers in no longer exists.

But, OK, let's spitball here - what are the line combinations if he comes here?

Vanek-Roy-Rolston
Hecht-Connolly-Pomminville
Goose-Neids-Grier
Kaleta-McCormick-Stafford

Feel free to just take Stafford out back and shoot him (or trade him, but the previous sounds more fun), and let Gaustad play between Kaleta and McCormick, and move Hecht to 3rd line, and play Ennis up here too...

Uh, Ennis isn't in your line chart. And Stafford is on the fourth line. And Kaleta's playing the wrong wing lol

I wouldn't touch him at $5M per for the next two years.

Thankfully he has a NTC that I doubt he'd waive to come to Buffalo.

For the right coin, I'd consider bringing him in.

He's got a rocket of a shot, can QB the PP pretty well and knows how to play big & mean and when to play it. Plus it would be another guy in the room with a ring who may be able to beat some sense into some of our guys on how to play gut check.

Rolston score 31 goals with the Bruins in the 01-02 season also.

And three times with the Wild, in a row.

Rolston isn't worth $5M, and that's what he's making for the next two seasons.

Totally agree with that. No doubt.

I never did say I wanted him or didn't. I simply said he had also score 31 goals before the lockout.

I'm intrigued by the idea, and cautiously optimistic at the same time.

He's a step slower, and for him, that's a REALLY bad sign. Without those blazing wheels, he's simply not the same player at all. He could however, add an exciting element to the power play. He can carry the puck very well, and work the point, or the half boards with some razor sharp passing and a strong shot.

There's probably a couple guys still out there that would be a better fit right now, but he might be the most affordable.
