Anyone wanna fill me in on how we looked Saturday night? I went camping and missed the game.
Sabres came out with lots of energy, then backslid into their usual "sleepwalk" mode for the first two periods - Miller standing on his head for the entire game, to keep them in contention.
They finally awoke in the third, after looking disjointed and raggedy. Roy scored an open-netter, top shelf to tie it at one, then a Butler laser-shot, screened from the point was tipped by Vanek for the go-ahead.
The Wings pressed very hard toward the end with Miller making save-after-incredible-save to seal the win - The Goose with the empty-netter, in the dying seconds.
Kudos to Paetsch-Ellis-Kaleta for showing energy and hustle all game long.
The rookie D showed very well, too - Myers getting more solid and confident, even when pressed. Butler - This guy is big league already. No sending him down; he should even supplant someone like Tallinder, on the depth chart. Weber, who is obviously bound and determined to stay up, played a very solid and aggressive game - Using his large frame generously and taking charge with his heads-up, sensible puck-movement.
Grier played limited time, but was rough-and-tumble, and take-no-shit, while he was out there - Solid forecheck, good use of the body - Caught a retaliatory penalty, to assert a "who's boss" after a questionable hit, in the corner.
Not a bad game - But, they still need to come out, and CONTINUE to maintain an energy level - Conditioning and mental discipline are brought into question.
Gotta play a full 60 minutes.
