It's always a street fight with the Ducks, and the past several years they have been the ones dishing out the beatings. The Sabres are not the same soft, tame team of years past, though, and you can expect a lot more battle this time around.

Buffalo is coming off perhaps their best game of the season, pounding the snot out of the Coyotes in Phoenix, 7-2. Pominville netted a couple goals, Connolly continued his NHL best point-streak, and even Vanek finally got off the schneid and scored.

Meanwhile, the Ducks have been on fire at home, winning seven straight at the Honda Center.

This game is officially rated 6 beers and two shots.

~ETC
----------------------------------------------------

The official NHL Preview:

Last 10: Buffalo 8-0-2; Anaheim 6-4-0

Season Series: This is the only meeting of the 2009-10 season between these teams. Anaheim swept a pair of games last season by identical 3-2 scores, getting a third-period power-play goal by Corey Perry on Feb. 2 at Honda Center and a 34-save performance by Jean-Sebastien Giguere on Feb. 24 at HSBC Arena.

Big Story: Buffalo surged into the Eastern Conference lead Monday night with a dominant effort in Phoenix. The Sabres, who have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, now have 66 points -- tied with the Capitals, but with one fewer game played. They could have first all to themselves by the end of Tuesday, depending on what happens in their game and Washington's matchup with Detroit.

Team Scope:

Sabres: Six different players scored goals and 11 recorded points as Buffalo won 7-2 in Phoenix. Jason Pominville led the way with a pair of tallies and he, Thomas Vanek, Jochen Hecht and Tim Connolly all finished with three-point efforts. The Sabres haven't lost a game in regulation since Dec. 23 in Washington, and now stand prepared to do battle with the Capitals and Devils for the East's top seed.

"I don't think a lot of people expected it at the start of the year but we believed, and we still do," Pominville said. "We're doing things the right way and we've got to keep that going."

Ducks: In spite of injuries that have knocked veteran forwards Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu out of the lineup, Anaheim has been making up ground in the Western Conference by taking care of business on home ice. The Ducks enter Tuesday with seven straight wins at the Honda Center, including a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Flames on Sunday in which Perry and Bobby Ryan scored third-period goals.

"We knew what was at stake," Perry said. "We're looking at the standings and we know what is going on. It's up to us. We have to go out and get every point we can. Those two points are huge for us. It was one of those games where we had to find a way to win."

Who's Hot: Connolly's three assists Monday gave the Buffalo forward a 12-game points streak in which he's compiled five goals and 14 assists. Vanek has two goals and four assists in his last five games. Goalie Ryan Miller is on a 6-0-1 run.

Perry has three goals and six points in Anaheim's last seven games. Ryan has a goal and three assists in the last four games. Rookie Dan Sexton has two goals and two assists in the last four games and eight goals in 22 games since being called up. Goalie Jonas Hiller is on a 6-1-0 run.

Injury Report:Koivu is out with a sprained right knee, while Selanne had jaw surgery after being hit by a puck. The Ducks are also without forward Joffrey Lupul, who is recovering from back surgery.

Stat Pack: Rookie defenseman Tyler Myers, who opened the scoring for the Sabres on Monday, leads all first-year players in assists (20), plus-minus (plus-12) and ice time (23:17). … Among the Anaheim players fueling the home streak, Ryan has five goals and five assists in his last seven games at Honda Center and Ryan Getzlaf has four goals and seven assists in his last 10 games there.

Puck Drop: The Ducks start a six-game road trip once the Sabres leave town -- it would be a huge momentum boost to continue their roll on home ice at the expense of an Eastern Conference powerhouse.

I hope Vanek makes himself a birthday present and tallies one or two

I think the key is to minimize Getzlaf's influence....it's gonna be a late one boys.

My lineup recommendation:

Sit Clarke, start Timmy K. Kennedy is always active around the puck, getting turnovers and loose pucks, mixing it up in scrums, creating opportunities, and playing smart hockey even when not scoring. Mac's just not getting on the score sheet, and without that going for him he's just a big, fat -10 without much else to show for his ice time.

This.

I'm on a flex schedule this week and have based my work/sleep/rink time on when we play. I'm off work today at 5pm(ish) will get home, work on the Aud for about an hour, sleep for an hr or two, hit the treadmill, which should bring me up to about 9 pm or so. Slap another coating on the Aud, then it's pretty much game time!

Work again tomorrow morning, but should we play as we did last night, the lack of sleep tonight can be justified. :D

We're encouraged to stay late, but my hours end at 4:15 and I'm usually out by 4:30. I'll get home, watch a movie, nap, write, and tune into the game. Good stuff.

But he's been a penalty taking machine lately. Unless he seriously learned his lesson sitting out against Phoenix, I say keep the lines the same as yesterday. If he has learned his lesson though, he has more upside than Clarke... so whatever lol. But that's just me.

Huge game tonight though. Anaheim got to rest yesterday, and we're far away from home on a back to back and playing later than usual... probably with Lalime in net. A solid win tonight would speak volumes for the character and potential of this team. ;)

Go Sabres!

I attended a Ducks / Canucks game earlier this season and the Ducks didn't impress me at all.

Can I assume we'll be seeing Lalime tonight (Because I want to see Miller on Thursday against a much better Kings team)?

...and no whining about the start time!
I go all season long with games starting at 4 in the afternoon :P

Man, it's gonna be a LATE night tonight. Crap.

Should be a great game, though. I think it's going to be incredibly feisty, just like last year in Anaheim.

He played pretty well in Anaheim last year. I'd be surprised if he didn't play.

Last night Vanek showed all of us, he can be a complete player, and a superstar in this league.

Tonight he continues this, and continues his way toward 20 goals in 20 games.

Sabres win 4-2.

I'm glad that the Sabres are playing late tonight, because I get out of work at 11:45, so I'll still be able to catch some of the game! :D

No, not this one.
I made an executive decision about not driving from Santa Monica to Anaheim during rush hour.
I'll be at the Kings game on Thursday though. My daughters first game :)

She's 4 and totally excited.
When I got our tickets in November, I told her we were going to a Sabres game "after Christmas".
Her response?
"I want Christmas to get here faster so I can go to the hockey game."
