Sabres look to bounce back at home after loss in Pittsburgh last night as they take on the Make Beliefs.

Quote:
Leafs try to end victory drought in Buffalo - John Kreiser - NHL.com Columnist

TV -- CBC (HD); MSG-B (HD)

Last 10 -- Toronto 4-5-1; Buffalo 6-4-0

Season series -- The Northeast Division rivals are meeting for the third time this season, but the first time since Nov. 26, when the Sabres sent the Leafs home with a 3-1 loss -- their sixth in a row at HSBC Arena.
Big story -- The Leafs have come out of the All-Star break on a high note, beating Florida 4-3 in a shootout before blanking Carolina 3-0 on Thursday. This is their first road game since the break. Buffalo wasted a chance to make up some ground in the playoff race by blowing a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Friday in the Sabres' first game back. They are still 11th with 51 points, six behind eighth-place Atlanta and just four more than 12th-place Toronto,

Team Scope:

Maple Leafs -- Have the Leafs found their goalie of the future? Rookie James Reimer made 27 saves in the win against Carolina and is making the case for more playing time. He's already caused the Leafs to send Jonas Gustavsson to the AHL Toronto Marlies and figures to share time with Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
"I have no hesitation to play him or (J.S. Giguere)," coach Ron Wilson said. "I think it's horses for courses right now."

Reimer, who will get the start in Buffalo, is 5-3-0 with a 1.96 goals-against and a .940 save percentage.
"Obviously I'm aware of the situation," Reimer said. "My job security up here, there isn't much of that. But as soon as I let those thoughts creep into my mind, I'm going to get nervous out there and it's going to get to me."

Sabres -- After a 10-day layoff, the Sabres got the jump on the Penguins, scoring twice in the first 7:03. But they generated little offense after that, and Pittsburgh scored three times in a 3:14 span to miss a chance to gain ground.
"I don't think it was panic, I just think we didn't play our best," defenseman Andrej Sekera said.
Buffalo is still 9-4-1 in its last 14 games, and had four games in hand on the eighth-place Thrashers.

Who's hot -- Toronto's Kris Versteeg has goals in back-to-back games. … Buffalo center Paul Gaustad has 2 goals in his last three games.
Injury report -- Toronto center John Mitchell (knee) is ready to return. Colton Orr is on IR with a head injury, and center Darryl Boyce isn't expected to play after leaving Thursday's game with a facial injury. … Buffalo is still without Patrick Kaleta (broken left hand). Center Derek Roy (leg surgery) is out for the season.

Stat pack -- Buffalo has outscored Toronto 24-10 in its six-game winning streak at home. Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller has won 11 of his last 12 against the Leafs while posting a 1.49 goals-against average.

Puck drop -- Toronto center Tim Brent, a career minor-leaguer before earning a spot with the parent club this season, was the talk of the town after a penalty-killing shift for the ages on Thursday in which he blocked three shots and dove to clear a puck -- all in a 30-second span -- earning a standing ovation from the Air Canada Centre crowd.

Brent said it was the kind of reception possible only in Toronto.

"There's hockey fans and there's Toronto Maple Leafs fans," Brent told the Leafs' website. "I know people say this all the time, but the fans here are students of the game. Believe me, in other places the fans don't react that way.”

Sabres keys to victory:

1. Strong Transition game
2. Limit Turn Overs in own zone
3. Contributions from the Blueline on the PP and Ev Strength
4. Thomas Vanek playing like Thomas Vanek

Keys to Victory for the Leafs:

1. Pray like hell
2. Hope McCormick isn't angry
3. " Gaustad " "
4. Containment of Stafford, and Vanek

Simply put, our stars give star efforts, and we're gonna win no question about it, our stars don't get going, and we're going to struggle.

If we kept Briere, drury and MacArthur :P

Vanek has about 15 invisible screening points and about 10 "making room" points.

No. I don't want Clark.

What I'm saying is, Vanek's a bum.

Seriously the Vanek hate on this board is just retarded...go find another whipping boy. How about Connolly or Pommers that make a ton of money; and produce less than our 3rd liners.

You guys bitch about mods disagreeing with your opinions, but some of this shit makes it pretty warranted. Who the fuck does MacArthur get to play with? Kessel and Kulemin/Versteeg?

Vanek plays with Pomminville and Hecht...maybe the problem is talent around him, and not so much him. How many dope passes does he get thrown in his direction every game, where he's put against the boards and forced to close down his open ice space. Not to mention the fact that Pommers and Hecht both couldn't hit the net from the blue paint.

I really dislike these boards most days after a loss, we blame the wrong fucking people, and go after the dudes who play pretty solid games.

Why not go after Miller for having a .923 save percentage, and Weber/Morrison for being 0 +/- last night and the most physical defensive pairing we had...oh wait, that happened to.

Fucking eh...

I completely agree with you man. Vanek is the man. I hated on him probably 2 years ago but he's been consistently giving it his all for most of this year. If he had someone to dish him the puck, he would have 40-50 goals. Notice how whenever he gets wide open or has a breakaway he buries it almost all the time? Hopefully with new ownership, we can finally get a good center for him, or at least a winger to put on the other side of him and Roy.

Also, let's go Buffalo! I'm really upset I'll be missing this game because my TV is broken and I need the box to watch the game because I have Center Ice...these games are always fun to watch! Myers, McCormick, and Gerbe for a 3-1 win?

I really think if you added Blake Wheeler or a Zubrus type guy to that line Vanek would infinitely improve. It doesn't have to be a premier playmaker like Havlat, just a guy with some serious size, that controls the puck well.

Basically the opposite of Pommers who is a shoot first type guy, and not much of a strong passing winger.

You're right. Vanek was awesome last night. I don't understand why people hate on him.

His ineffectiveness last night was definitely all Hecht and Pominville's fault.

I will be changing back to Direct TV at the end of the season.....pricks.

rob ray is wrong about the pens not being physical, they have been in the top 3 in hits all year. and he was double wrong about the sabres not being physical last night, if anything they were too aggressive.

the long lay off was tough on the conditioning of the team, i expect more than 15 minutes of hop tonight.

hopefully miller brought his glove hand too

Yhoshi is right. And the number is closer to 20. Also, MacArthur has played one more game, has played with better talent (aka not cody mccormick or nathan gerbe), and hasn't played hurt.
