Isles host Sabres, seek third straight win
Per NHL.com

Last 10 -- Buffalo 8-1-1; New York 3-4-3

Season series -- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Buffalo took an early 3-0 lead on the way to a 6-3 victory at HSBC Arena on Oct. 16. The Sabres and Islanders split their four-game series last season.

Big story -- Can anyone cool off the Sabres? Buffalo blew a 2-1 lead by allowing a shorthanded goal in the final minute to Toronto at home Friday night, but Tim Connolly scored a power-play goal 1:04 into OT to give the Sabres a 3-2 win. It was Buffalo's fourth win in a row, and the Sabres have matched the second-best start since the franchise entered the NHL in 1970. The 1975-76 Sabres also started 8-1-1; the '06-07 version won its first 10 games.

Team Scope:

Sabres -- Ryan Miller is making a good case to be the starter for Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Miller improved to 8-0-1 with a 33-save performance against the Leafs on Friday -- including 15 saves in the third period when Toronto outshot Buffalo 16-5.

"That's who he is. He's a battler and the backbone of our team," Buffalo captain Craig Rivet said. "We played against a feisty team that wanted a win, and he stood on his head a couple times to help us out. He was the main reason we got the win."

Islanders -- Life is starting to look a little brighter on Long Island after a couple of victories. The Islanders are actually 3-1-2 in their last six and coming off back-to-back victories -- 3-1 over the Rangers at home on Wednesday and 4-3 in overtime at Washington on Friday.

The game against the Caps was the seventh that has gone past regulation, but just the second time the Islanders went home with the extra point.

"We were right on the cusp of getting some wins," coach Scott Gordon said. "A lot of things have been coming together."

Who's hot -- Tim Connolly was the man for Buffalo against the Leafs, setting up Drew Stafford's goal before scoring on a second-period breakaway and an overtime power play. He is 3-6-9 in Buffalo's last five games. Miller has yet to lose in regulation.

Injury report -- Buffalo defenseman Toni Lydman has missed the Sabres' last three games with a groin problem. The Islanders are still without forward Trent Hunter (chest), who could be back next week, and goaltender Rick DiPietro, who's recuperating from hip and knee surgery and may be back around Thanksgiving.

Stat pack -- This is the 70th time the teams have met at the Nassau Coliseum, and they're dead-even through the first 69. Both teams have won 30 times (29 in regulation, the Islanders once in OT and Buffalo once in a shootout), and the other nine games ended in ties.

Puck drop -- Both teams played Friday and are playing for the third time in four nights. The Sabres are a better team, but the Islanders are starting to get their legs after a shaky start -- and they'll have Martin Biron, an ex-Sabre, in goal. There's nothing he'd like better than to beat his old team -- he's 6-2-1 lifetime against the Sabres but has never started against them as an Islander.

-- John Kreiser, NHL.com

Buffalo looks to keep their winning streak in tact and the Islanders have finally found a winning way with a 2 game win streak of their own. The Islanders are in a tie for 8th place with 11 points and are climbing up the standings. Buffalo is in 3rd with 17 points and have only played 10 games so far with the two leaders both playing in 13 games.

A win tomorrow would be huge just like Phil said.

Maybe the team will play with confidence with Lalime in net then.

The Isles played us tough last time...this won't be a cakewalk, especially with them coming off wins over the Rags and the Caps

I'm really looking forward to this one. There was a great interview on NHLN with Stan Fischler (on Friday before their win over the Caps) whom predicted the Isles would turn it around and surprise everyone - including Fischler's projection that they would make the playoffs. Good. We play up to good teams.

Marty is getting the go ahead for the Isles tonight (as per sabres.com) Safe assumption we'll see Patty tonight. This is going to be a real test. If the boys play as they can, who we have in net shouldn't make a difference.

I'd like to see smarter passes tonight, better awareness on both sides of the puck. Also, last night it seemed like every odd line was taking a break when on the ice. The Grier line seemed to be the only one making noise. All 4 lines gatta roll and guys gatta keep their feet moving. Isles will be out to shake things up tonight and the boys can't go on how things went last game. They gatta forget the 6-3 win and focus on this game.

If we play our system and Patty sees the puck, no reason why we shouldn't hammer these Guys.

eh I don't have anything against the isles, only their fans for throwing shit on the ice when we beat them during the 06-07 playoffs. Actually, I think i might be subconciously rooting for them to make the playoffs. I wouldn't mind facing them first round if they're the 8th seed....

oh no he didn't.... :o

yes, yes I just did

Well, we're gonna see a serious patch-job on the roster tonight, what with 3 Sabres being swiney. It's gonna be tough, especially with the Isles riding high on two straight wins and the Sabres slacking lately.

Goose and who else?
Any speculation based on this; "Paul Gaustad is the only player Ruff mentioned by name in his post-game comments, but said he is not the only one to be affected by it. Andrej Sekera, who has not played since Oct. 10 with a rib injury will be activated from injured reserve while Nathan Paetsch will move up to play forward to fill the void."

ETA: This is another one of those MSG away games in HD for certain carriers.

I'd be shocked if Lalime didn't play. We need a strong effort from him. Not a must win, but he's gotta play well sometime.

Islanders beat the Caps last night. That took some effort, and they could be tired. Could take a while for both teams to find their legs, after playing tough games last night.

Timbo, there are times we NEED Lalime to win. It's his job as backup - to win. And if he doesn't, then he's not doing his job.

True, dat. What I was saying is that, for the TEAM, it's not a must win. For Lalime as a player, it's a very important game.

See, now I wouldn't doubt that Lalime plays, but I'd prefer Miller as well. Rob is right - ride the hot hand. It's his first back-to-back of the season, and the entire team rests until their next game Wednesday.

Do the right thing.
