Anyways back to the hart trophy debate, OV does not deserve that heart at all. If he wins this award this year then as Phil said its a complete farce.

and yes, i know howard was never mentioned, but i showed his stats to show you how even it is across the board. also, as much as i love myers, im almost certain howard will get the calder.

Steve Mason 61 GP 33-20-7 2.29 GAA .916 SV% 10 Shutouts
Jimmy Howard 54 GP 30-15-9 2.29 GAA 9.24 SV% 1 Shutout

Steve Mason won the award last year in a weaker year for rookies because he had 10 shutouts for Columbus and was basically the only reason they snuck into the playoffs. Jimmy Howard is posting similar numbers without the miraculous SO total playing for Detroit. Yeah they started slow and battled through injuries but they still had arguably the best coach in the NHL on their bench. They still had one of the best dmen in the league no matter how much he has slowed down. Just his presence alone will calm any team down. Detroit is still one of the most structured, most disciplined teams in the league. So many players with a high hockey IQ. They win Cups with Osgood as the goalie becuase they play such a great team game. They can win with anyone in net just as long as that goalie can keep them in games.
I just dont see how a 25 year old goalie for Detroit can beat out 2 19 year old kids who have been a huge reason to their teams surprising seasons.

you must have missed when osgood couldnt keep the wings in the game, and how osgood hasnt played in almost 2 months.

once again, age is not a factor here. a starting goalie stealing wins for a team in his rookie year is impressive. its still his first year in the league. thats what this is. lidstrom also is above average this season, at best. he has slipped badly.

this isnt the wings team of the past, if you watch the games, like i have, its literally howard keeping them in games. its not like hes just facing point shots and such. detroits defense is average at best.

shut outs is a glamor stat, nothing more. what matters is wins and win percentage. and just as well, howards save percentage is very high. most seasons, his numbers are veznia finalist numbers.

Lidstrom is 40, did you really think a 40 year old guy is still gonna play like he is can still win a Norris.

I'd still take Lidstrom over some of the scrubs on our team.

Lidstrom is still a very great defender, slowed down a bit, but it's not like he wouldn't be a first pair defensemen on EVERY team in the league still.

scott burnside makes a case for jim howard... for the hart trophy. last night, larry murphy said that howard should be mentioned, not win, but a potential nominee for veznia after last nights shutout.

The MVP talk is certainly going to heat up as the season winds down and here's one Hart Trophy vote for Ryan Miller from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal.

Wrote Matheson: "The Buffalo Sabres would be the Columbus Blue Jackets without Ryan Miller ... The Sabres would have 65 points, not 90, if Miller wasn't in the lineup. Instead, they could be the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference."

OK, that may be unduly harsh. But it's easy to see his point too. Miller has 37 of Buffalo's 41 victories this season. The Sabres probably would have gone nowhere had he suffered a longterm injury like he did last year. And he's the reason Buffalo rates as a tough out for any potential playoff opponent.

A note on Matheson: He's one of the most respected longtime writers in the league. He covered the Oilers during the glory days of the 1980s. It's no insignificant item when a big name on the hockey beat puts his stamp on Miller's MVP candidacy over the likes of Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby or Henrik Sedin.
