"I guess when it came down to it, I realized that there was nothing I could do to come close to following in [Ryan] Miller's footsteps," said a teary eyed Howard. "Imagine working your whole life towards something, and realizing that once you've arrived, somebody has already beat you to it... that's kind of what this feels like."

Howard, who has posted terrific numbers with Detroit this season, says he plans on becoming a professional scout.

"I'd like to say involved with the game in some way, shape or form. There is no sport like hockey and no league like the NHL. I'm proud to have been a part of it as a player, and I look forward to contributing in other ways in the future."

What does he plan on doing with his free time this offseason?

"Haha that's easy," he told us with a chuckle. "I'm going to work at Vogue with Sean Avery."
