After reading all the great things he had to say about playing in Toronto and how much he was looking forward to the change, all I was thinking was that this guy is going to come back to bite us in the ass that first game against Buffalo.

Then I realized he'll likely break his teeth in the process and will be on the IR for the duration of the contract.

Connolly? Getting by our defense? Robyn Regher will Hemsy his ass, only this time he just has to lightly graze him.

Ture but if Robyn does this to Timmy Concussion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pjLPtPuWZI he might kill him

Funny quote from Burke...

“We were in on most of the free agents that signed,” said Burke. “We were aware of what they were getting, we made offers on a number of them. The term that was given to multiple players, the salaries that were paid to multiple players just made no sense to us at all. And we have cash and cap space. That doesn’t mean it’s sensible to spend it on marginal players. It makes no sense.”

Uh...Connolly...?

I"ve already said that Burke wasn't an idiot for signing Connolly, and the market pretty much dictated what he had to do. That said, he can't come out talking as if he was way too smart to over pay somebody. Damn he's such an arrogant ass.

This post isn't really directed at you 1980, I'm just trying to process this. Went out of town over the weekend and I'm just getting back into the loop free agency-wise. And I have to say HOLY FUCKING HELL!
$10 million... Tim Connolly...$10 million It booggles the mind. Maybe everyone's tired of me harping on this but how the hell can owners afford to pay mediocre to crap players like superstars? Was nothing learned by the lockout? The answers: they can't afford to pay them like this and nothing was learned.

And to the idea that the "market dictates" these salaries, I say BS. "The market" doesn't exist outside what these very owners decide. It's insane and I can hardly fathom it. These fucking idiot owners deserve to go bankrupt when they inevitably do.

Well, we're both right. It's the market dictating what Burke (or any other GM) does with UFAs because they're afraid of losing out on a player they want or need, regardless of price. However, the market is set by the GMs themselves, so they're their own worst enemies.

Burke shelled out that contract because he knew Connolly was the best option left out of a very limited list, and had the cap space, and knew that if he didn't give Connolly that deal some other GM would. It was a lesser option for Burke (in his mind) to not have the player at all than to have him at an unfair price. I thought for sure that Connolly would have to settle for a deal under 4 mil per, but I was corrected (again) by the fear these GMs have of not "doing anything" while others do. This summer was fueled by a significant cap increase that made it worse.

But the cap goes up because the league is making more money, so in a different view everything is panning out fairly between teams and players. It just doesn't sit well when a under achiever benefits from the process.

Connolly and Lupul?? 10 million dollars of pure fear in the opposition?? Those 2 make the Kessel deal look like a steal. Burke is an idiot. I know he's a highly experienced GM, but he is just making dumb move after dumb move. If(and only if) Loops returns to pre-injury form, he's worth maybe $4. If Connolly feeds him 35 goals(not likely), then he's worth 3.5. Two mighty big injury prone "ifs" there for a total potential value of $7.5.

I'm surprised Leaf Nation isn't getting frustrated with Burke by now.
