Freak injury to Bieksa's leg another case of lousy luck"Bieksa was hurt in the second period Tuesday night as he threw a heavy check along the sideboards on Phoenix Coyote Petr Prucha, whose skate tore into the Canuck’s left leg, just above the ankle.
It’s a second lightning-strike on Bieksa, who two seasons ago missed 47 games after his calf was cleaved open by former Nashville Predator Vern Fiddler’s skate.
“It’s horrible,” Bieksa said. “I doesn’t help when they score on the play, too, and it’s my guy because I can’t get back to the net.”
Prucha was unchecked at the top of the crease and converted Radim Vrbata’s pass during Phoenix’s 3-2 shootout victory.
Bieksa was drifting in the high slot, looking down towards his foot, when Prucha made it 2-1 at 17:02 of the second period. Initially, Bieksa thought he might have a skate problem.
“I went to put pressure on it to skate back to the net and my ankle kind of gave out,” Bieksa said. “I thought maybe my skate blade was broken, but I kind of figured it out from there. It’s not my Achilles at all.”
Bieksa said he didn’t want to discuss any details about the injury until he knows more. But he leaned heavily on a crutch as he left the dressing room and will be going back to Vancouver today. The injury will probably be measured in weeks, possibly many of them, not days."Another ugly injury...there's been quite a few skate-cuts recently.
