one, theres only protection on your front side. back is just straps. two, you dont have range of motion to protect yourself. therefore, you cant protect yourself. at all. people think you cant feel anything in that? BULL SHIT!
thats why it is absolutely wrong for a player to fight a goalie unless the goalie goes after a forward. thats why what andrew peters did to emery is just pure garbage.
truth be told, what they are wearing will protect them to an extent if they fall. the only place they are lacking that is different from skaters is on their back (and most chest protectors will have something small their anyway). other then that they are protected. as far as the masks go. while they might have been built for pucks only, they will still protect a player from the ice if need be. might hurt a little more, but the player will be fine.
as for the limited mobility. goalies can move in their stuff pretty damn well since they have to be able to make the quick saves that are necessary for their job. sure, they are slower then they would be with out any of it but the mobility isnt horrible but any means.
im well aware that it still hurts to get hit with the puck but it sounds like your saying a bullet proof vest will stop a bullet but a punch to the stomach will break the ribs.
now, i dont agree with goalies being completely off limits for simply for that fact that it makes them, more or less, gods. if a goalie goes out like price did in that situation then they have to expect some kind of contact. not necessarily a full body check or even what Janssen did but your putting yourself, unnecessarily, in harms way at that point and their will should probably be consequences.
All this coming from another goalie.
masks squish. helmets do not. say theres contact in the crease, and someone falls on your head, its like a grape. squish. its weird, but thats how they are built to absorb the pucks momentum.
and i never said the price hit was illegal. he put himself out there, both players go for the puck, that happens. but if the goalie moves the puck, you shouldnt be able to just say, oh, he JUST moved the puck. SMASH! like hes a forward.. you go for the puck, not the body on a goalie, and thats fine. if you bump the goalie, thats ok. you crush him? perhaps thats different.
couple years ago, i played the puck, and while skating back to my net, i was absolutely leveled. my mask flew off, and i hit my head on the cross bar, then on the ice. the guys response was "he was out of the crease, hes fair game, right?" he ended up with no penalty, and i ended up with a grade 2 concussion, and no idea how to count to 5 for a month.
and phil, i get what you were saying, but the only way that works is if the crease is expanded. theres just too much grey area, ya know?
