Locking up a 100 point player for a decade with a $67M contract? Sure hope his production doesn't drop off, or that it's tiered right.

Yea, until they become Tampa II. Alex brings up a legitimate point about how much they're spending on their stars.

These mega long term, super expensive contracts annoy me for some reason. I think they're stupid. The GM might as well just say during the announcement, "We signed [insert player here] for a gajillion years for a bazillion dollars!!!!!!! YAYYY!"

If Varlamov can stay healthy and prove he's a starting goaltender, if their solid defensive rookies (Carlson and Alzner) and whoevers left (plus offseason moves) can help stabilize their back end like they want them too, and if their offense can continue to tear up the league (resigning Backstrom was a huge part of that)... Washington will be a scary, scary team next year.

Well, they have one season of Varlamov cheap before his RFA time comes up because, if he DOES prove he's legit, he's going to command some money.

NHLNumbers.com has already been updated with Backstrom's deal, and it puts the Caps at 42.602M already for next season. That's $15M available, and they have a slew of UFAs (10) and RFAs (8) to deal with.

Yeah I don't think those long contracts are worth it for anything but a franchise type player.

so you would be mad if the sabres signed tyler myers to a 10 or 12 year contract?

Manning the machine gun on the Tyler Myers Bandwagon - just in case any teams have an idea of prying him away from us (3 GM's shot already)

Connolly/Roy - 2 goals in the last 47 playoff games

You gotta wonder what they're thinking with Semin now. Where does he fit into their plans after next season? If they extend him to a similar deal..... they're fucked.

I would sure as hell NOT give him a 10 to 12 year year deal. Give him 7 years.

10 to 12 years are you kidding me? Who knows what's going to happen in 10-12 years. Who knows who's going to be on the market, who knows what your team's needs are going to be during those 10-12 years. It's a gamble for sure.

10 years for a player who can produce 100 points now, I like it and don't disagree with him. He is with you for life, and you have Ovechkin with him for life.

It's not too stupid and it's not unreasonable, just because with how young the guy is, he still has plenty of hockey left in him.
