I said that!! But what I said was he wore Rhode Island for a chest protector.

But look at the size of Millers chest protector! 165 lb guy is wider than Albert Hainsworth with that thing. Mind you; I still think he'd be great in smaller gear.

in ken drydens book, "the game" (which is a great read) he comments how in the 50s and 60s, only 2 guys on each team had hard shots, and in drydens hayday, he comments how it is now about half the team.

subsequently, in partick roys book, he comments on drydens observation, and said that between drydens last nhl season, 78-79, and roys rookie season, 85-86, that number was almost 100 percent of players have hard shots.

the space age equipment is needed for goalies. things are fine how they are. anything less, and injuries will be frequent.

the days of garth snows SHINGLE padded chest protector is gone, as is JS gigueres massive pads of 2003. its fine how it is.

rumour has it giguere had verticle bars in his protector, that would force the shoulders up when he went into a butterfly.

Big equipment?? Talk to Luongo, that guy has never worn equipment that has never legal in my books.

Well isn't it a good thing you're not in charge of the NHL then, because the league would go to shit with your ideas.

Look at his chest protector if you don't belive me then and tell me if you think its legal :shhh:

in looking at those two pictures, one thing really sticks out...snows leg pads were fucking huuuuuuge, the chest protectors look at little bigger in 2003 but not a drastic change like the leg pads

Skaters now stand in front of wicked slap shots without flinching because of their armor, and don't have all the extra bloat. Protection and bulk are not necessarily related.

100 mph slapshot will hurt unless you are wearing titanium plating, and even then, it can hurt.

You think getting shot with a bullet wearing Kevlar might not hurt, but it hurts also, and that shit is the strongest shit out there. Not that I have ever been shot before, I've seen videos of people and they all say it hurts like a bitch still.

You are obviously a card carrying member of the goalkeepers union. You should be forced to wear the shit equipment I wore in goal (albeit briefly), oh so many years ago......

With the materials available today, safety can be maintained without having to super size the damn equipment. There is bullet proof protection that is less bulky than much of what is being worn.

Besides Mike; we want to see you suffer horribly.........

Yay, someone mentioned lax! *goes back into hiding*

But seriously, I can only imagine how much those pucks hurt.

And, ETC, those players standing in front of 100 mph slapshots get fucked up. A story with Goose last season talked about his work in front of the net and they talked about like five gnarly purple welts he had on his chest and belleh from deflections he missed.

I never said it doesn't hurt to get hit with the puck, I just said if players stand in front of slap shots without 12 pillows around their legs and waste surely it's not necessary for the goalies to be puffed up like Michelin men from a protection standpoint.

The over-sized equipment goalies wear today is a performance enhancing foam, not body protection. This really isn't saying anything new or controversial. The NHL just has to figure out how much they will reduce the equipment bulk so it's standardized equally for every player.

personally, i think goalie equipment is fine now. reducing pads to 11 inches wide actually helped goalies, as the legs are lighter and you have more range of motion.
