however! i was wrong about the whalers. hartford owns the rights to the name and history. Yeah it depends on the circumstances of the move. I know when the Seattle Super Sonics moved, the new ownership also received the hsitory of the franchise, even though the name and uniforms changed, which just sickens me. The sonics are, for all intents and purposes, dead to never return. Hartford did the right thing. Keep the team's history where it belongs. FALSE FALSE FALSE! the city of seattle retained the supersonic name, and the teams history will be "shared" between the exsisting relocated franchise, and a new franchise, should it come to fruition. the city retains the history, as does the franchise.

Ownership of the Supersonics name is questionable.
Oklahoma City agreed not to use the Supersonics name or marks with the new franchise. That doesn't mean they don't own it.

I'm also pretty sure the Hurricanes own the Whalers name, even though they don't use it now since Karmanos is still the owner of the Hurricanes, and he was the owner of the Whalers when they moved.
Heck he uses the Whalers name for his Junior team in Plymouth.

According to the US Patent and Trademark office, the trademark on 'Hartford Whalers' was last owned by:
HURRICANES HOCKEY, L.P. 31440 NORTHWESTERN HIGHWAY FARMINGTON HILLS, MICHIGAN 48334
I'm not going to follow the corporations around, but I'm pretty sure this ends up as Gale Force Holdings, Karmanos' company that owns the Canes.
It's not totally clear, but it looks like the registration on the Whalers marks might actually be expired.

Heck he uses the Whalers name for his Junior team in Plymouth. he was going to retain the whalers name if the hartford move to detroit went through. the deal fell through at the last hour, supposedly.

It is, Squanto. Now everyone is going nuts making merch and memorabilia with the Whalers logo, hoping to feed off of demand.
Also, Dreger is reporting (as of today) that there has been no discussion. This certainly has come out of left field. I think Pants has an in on this story...keep us updated, dude!
