Yeah, we're in apples and oranges land.

I'm not not trying to debate the overall viability of hockey in Winnipeg. I've just been pointing out holes in the justifications used on that website you linked.

I'd take Winnipeg over any of the Sunbelt franchises any day of the week. I think they have some real economic concerns, but nothing as bad as the Atlantas/Nashvilles of the world.

sadly, team records from before the move still belong to the coyotes, so a team moving there will not be named the jets :(

same thing if hartford gets a team, and quebec city :(

isnt it up to the owner to name the team? they could change the name to the cities former name.

depends on the team owners of the other franchises. if the coyotes grant permission, they could, possibly for a monetary fee. i know the ravens allowed the browns to use the old name, but im not sure if the new franchise kicked over some funds for it. i just dont think they will use the names, or perhaps even be allowed to.

however! i was wrong about the whalers. hartford owns the rights to the name and history.

That was different. The Browns never really moved.

Model transferred ownership of the Browns franchise to the NFL in return for being awarded a new franchise in Baltimore. The Browns franchise was then 'suspended' if you will until they reentered the league. So, the Browns never really left Cleveland.

The Avs dumped the Nordiques name (for obvious reasons), so not sure who holds that one. In fact, I wonder who holds their old Rockies name...the Devils, maybe, since that's where they relocated to in '83? I'm sure "North Stars" is retained by Dallas.

Why Calgary kept Atlanta's "Flames" team name is anyone's guess, but it certainly made no sense. Kinda like Utah keeping the Jazz name from New Orleans.

All this talk aside, if Bettman was willing to go nuclear to keep the Coyote financial blood bath in Phoenix what makes anyone think he'd suddenly give the thumbs up to relocating out of Atlanta? Personally, I think he'd give away a kidney before okaying that move. His entire legacy as a commissioner is predicated on the southern strategy, and as long as he's the commissioner he will not permit any of those teams to be relocated.

They might have dumped the name but they still hold the records of that team.

It's the same with Hartford Whalers, The Hurricanes umped the name but still hold their records. Pheonix doesn't use the Jets name, but still holds the records.

Yeah it depends on the circumstances of the move. I know when the Seattle Super Sonics moved, the new ownership also received the hsitory of the franchise, even though the name and uniforms changed, which just sickens me. The sonics are, for all intents and purposes, dead to never return. Hartford did the right thing. Keep the team's history where it belongs.

FALSE FALSE FALSE!

the city of seattle retained the supersonic name, and the teams history will be "shared" between the exsisting relocated franchise, and a new franchise, should it come to fruition. the city retains the history, as does the franchise.

Ownership of the Supersonics name is questionable.

Oklahoma City agreed not to use the Supersonics name or marks with the new franchise. That doesn't mean they don't own it.

I'm also pretty sure the Hurricanes own the Whalers name, even though they don't use it now since Karmanos is still the owner of the Hurricanes, and he was the owner of the Whalers when they moved.

Heck he uses the Whalers name for his Junior team in Plymouth.

According to the US Patent and Trademark office, the trademark on 'Hartford Whalers' was last owned by:

HURRICANES HOCKEY, L.P.
31440 NORTHWESTERN HIGHWAY
FARMINGTON HILLS, MICHIGAN 48334

I'm not going to follow the corporations around, but I'm pretty sure this ends up as Gale Force Holdings, Karmanos' company that owns the Canes.

It's not totally clear, but it looks like the registration on the Whalers marks might actually be expired.

he was going to retain the whalers name if the hartford move to detroit went through. the deal fell through at the last hour, supposedly.

It is, Squanto. Now everyone is going nuts making merch and memorabilia with the Whalers logo, hoping to feed off of demand.

Also, Dreger is reporting (as of today) that there has been no discussion. This certainly has come out of left field. I think Pants has an in on this story...keep us updated, dude!
