Cap space has as much to do with trades as production. It's been that way for four + years but people still only look up stat lines to judge trades.

Well it's not so much cap space as it is future considerations as well, especially when people are talking about sellers at the deadline. Several teams that are sellers this year, will be strong buyers in a few years.

I still think Dallas could have gotten more in return. But they definitely had to do something capwise, due to the fact in the next 4 years a lot of their young talent and future draft picks will be commanding large dollar amounts in salary.

Ideally, Joe Nieuwendyk should've gotten picks with Goligoski for Neal and Niskanen. A 2nd would've sufficed, a pair of 3rds ok.

Well that and Neal would have gotten a huge raise (estimating around 5.5M) and with the raises coming to Benn and Blindenbacher in the next few years, would have been tough to keep Neal and get any real value for him once they were up against the cap.

They already had over 5 million in cap space, so even if Neal got a 3 million dollar raise they could have easily resigned him after resigning Bradley.

Ok, 5M in cap space with Neal, he gets 3M, now you have 2M to sign Benn and Blidenbacher, both of which will command atleast 3M dollar salaries, now they're up against the cap...mathematics, it's an amazing thing...

Not all about this year, especially when you're out of the playoffs, and potentially losing your best player.

Not to mention several other guys under deals over the next few years, and them potentially getting a top 5 pick, and a player who is going to command atleast Seguin money out of the next two drafts

Neal isn't getting a 3 million dollar raise in the first place abacus-boy, he's not getting more than Giroux with his RFA deal lol. And how much do you think Goligoski is going to make after next season? Another 1.8?

Yeah, real "cap saver".

He got robbed, only he doesn't know it yet. Same thing I told Ducks fans when they said they won the Whitney deal, "just wait and see".

Quote:
“You have to give up something good to get something good, so there is some risk involved,” Nieuwendyk said. “But we really do believe we have made our team better, and that’s the key for me.”

CLEARLY they gave up on Niskanen, but holy shit you couldn't get Shero to throw in a 4th rounder AT LEAST? lol

He puts up better numbers than Jordan Staal, when he got that 4M dollar contract, and will score 30-35 goals next year, what do you think he's going to get? Jordan Staal money? In what world do you do live? Me I live in a world where realism and business occur, you apparently live in Pittsburgh where you can get a bargain just because you get to play with Crosby?

Giroux signed that extension while putting up 47points one year, and 27 the year before, Neal has put up 37, 55, and is on pace for at least 50 this year...compare and contrast. Giroux was paid on that 47point showing, not his 54 point showing thus far this year.

I see you want to throw down with The King, very well peasant child, consider this lesson free of charge.

Giroux had 21 points in 23 games in the playoffs, based on that star-like production alone he could have commanded 5 million.

You mentioned Staal:

Per 82 games played Staal puts up 21 goals and 43 points, as well as Selke-calibre defensive play. Neal: 27g and 50 points.

Yeah, you go ahead and give him another 1.5 kid, I'm sure that makes sense to you.

So this summer Goligoski will be in the books for 1.8 - and Neal makes 2.8.

But hey, let's pretend that Neal will make 5 million a year on his RFA deal LOL.

So that means that he would make 2.2 more this summer. Goligoski makes .3 more than the d-man they traded, add in league minimum scrub to replace Neal and you got a grand total of 1.3 in cap savings.

WOW! LOL WHAT A GREAT SALARY DUMP!!

You and I are obviously miles apart on this subject.

All I'm going to say about this is calling me kid, and calling yourself king...I think that's pretty arrogant, and completely false. But I would appreciate if we could have a disagreement in a more adult manor.

Oh come on I was just jagging, you started with the what world do you live in talk. My numbers were way off anyways lol. I said it was 1.3 in savings, but actually it was 4.1. Which is actually a huge savings. But considering the fact that they already had 5 million in space to sign those other guys, I don't think their hand was forced. And besides, draft picks don't count against the cap and he couldn't even get one of those. Also don't forget that Goligoski will be a UFA after next season and Richards will likely come back at a lower cap hit.

Goligoski will be an RFA after next season. Other than that I have to agree with you on most of it. The notion the Stars are saving cap to re-sign Richards is BS, as per the reasoning you already stated. It's funny the minute someone gets ripped off it MUST be a salary dump.

Nice, my fortune cookie said something about befriending enemies today. :)

I'm pretty sure the CBA states that 26 year olds are UFA now, not like it used to be. And I have to admit that I also suspected that they were trying to make cap room to sign Richards, but for the love of God he's already making 7.8, the odds are his salary is going to go down.

Capgeek says he will finish his contract as an RFA, and I confirmed this on the Stars board already. He will however be a UFA before Neal, which is another reason I think JN made a retarded deal. He would have certainly been able to retain Neal at least as long as he will Gogo. Almost certainly longer.

That's right, Neal is signed through next season too (somebody just hit my window with a snow ball!). It's just a one sided hockey trade.

I REALLY wanted to stand out in my doorway and shout, "You little bastard kids, I'll gut your mother like a pig!!" while waving one of my crutches in the air angrily. But it was -1 out there with like a foot of snow. Sucks though, that would have been awesome. :)

They haven't had a true 30 goal winger since 2002, this could be the guy.

And when Crosby ever plays again they will have pretty nice line one

Rumors persist that they are going to go after Kovalev at the deadline, he was insanely popular here. My favorite player for years. Maybe the magic of everybody dusting off their Kovalev jerseys and the PA guy shouting, "Scored by...The Russian Rifle...Aleaxie..AK-27...KOOOOOOOOVVVVAlevvvvvvvv" will get him inspired again. I gotta admit, it would be sweet to revisit the Kovy days, I'm still butt hurt that Mario didn't resign him like he said he would. Just so long as he doesn't pwn the Sabres like he used too. ;)
