modano still mulling his future, but so far the red wings are the only team to call him, and he would play the third line centre position.

If the Islanders sign him to 10 mil a year then they are one of the stupidest teams in all of the NHL.

Maybe. They'd be able to blow up the team in the summer of 2011 and re-form it under the image of a Kovy/Tavares/Okposo line with lots of young supporting staff and wily veterans, but it's still a ludicrous price to pay.

Especially with Okposo and Tavares' rookie deals running out. If its really high, I hope the term is short. Like a 4 year $40 million deal.

I don't understand why he rejected the max offer from Atlanta then? If he wants to play in front of fans for lots of money, NYI is not the place to go either. It's not the 80's anymore.

He did because he knew if he got traded to, say, NJD, he'd have a shot at a Stanley Cup and a big pay day all in the same calendar year.

Anyways, a Russian magazine or newspaper is reporting that the KHL club SKA has offered him a 4 yr $9M per deal and he (being Kovalchuk) told them if they'd increase it to $10M per he'd sign with them immediately.

Wouldn't 9 mil In russia be more then 10 mil in America? I thought Russia didn't tax income or something weird like that.

I read somewhere that he was looking in the neighborhood of $11 million a season! C'mom! Ovechkin and Crosby don't make that kind of money, what makes him think he should?

I would put him in a 7 million range max! But it is free agency crazyness...

Well, when talking about players going to Russia, the dollar amount is always in USD. And no, they don't tax it.

I hope he goes back to Russia an rots away for the next four years. Nothing bothers me more than one-way Russian hockey players demanding WAAAY more money than they are worth. Go the fuck home and save this league from your whiny, me-first, crying pussy act. Take that shit back to the motherland, I'm sure things are MUUUUCH better over there. When the league folds in two years and they still owe you half the salary they promised, we'll all be laughing when you're begging teams to sign you for $5 million a season. (Rant Over)

He plays decent enough defense, actually. He's great defending the point in the defensive zone, blocking he shot, then sprinting away for a break or 2-on-1.

Jay Grossman, Ilya Kovalchuk's agent, says his client is making the decision on his future today.

If he's signing today, all signs point to the Islanders.
