My living room recliner was mentioning this as well.

I still feel strongly the only guaranteed City for relocation success is Toronto. The area is bigger than Quebec and Winnipeg x 2. Corporation wise; several times larger than both combined.

Idemnification certainly would be an expensive proposition.

But then Toronto deserves an NHL team! ;)

I'm not totally sure I believe it either, but those I've heard it from (which is up to 2 now, another who LIVES in Winnipeg with parents in high places) are very certain of it

Take it or leave it. I'm not positive either.

Winnipeg needs their team back. Very passionate fans that love their hockey!

Get a load of this. When the fans heard that the Jets were leaving they held many fundraisers and events to gather some money. They raised $11,000,000!!!!

Now if that's not a hockey crazy city then I don't know what is.

depends on the team owners of the other franchises. if the coyotes grant permission, they could, possibly for a monetary fee. i know the ravens allowed the browns to use the old name, but im not sure if the new franchise kicked over some funds for it. i just dont think they will use the names, or perhaps even be allowed to.

however! i was wrong about the whalers. hartford owns the rights to the name and history.

not anymore, the copyright expired so its fair game now. which would explain the massive influx of whalers stuff hitting online stores like Rivercity Sports and IceJerseys.

Surely nothing more than a rumor. I still believe we'll get a team here within the next 5-10 years. Mark Chipman, who owns the MTS Center has been talking with the NHL for a few years now and is apparently in Bettman's good book. He's doing the exact opposite of what Ballsillie was doing. He's playing by the rules and taking his time waiting for everything to fall in place.

And when we finally get a team here in Winnipeg, you're all invited when the Sabres come to town. I have a feeling I'll need all the friends I can get. I might wear my slug jersey in case I get beer poured on me. Fans here take their hockey VERY seriously...

But two kicks at the can? If it was me you get one chance and your out. Winnipeg is an exception because they actually have fans that would back up there team, hell any Canadian city can back up an NHL team

Please remember this rumor is very unsubstantiated, so despite the fact that the Thrashers are a flop in Atlanta they ain't going anywhere as long as Bettman is commissioner.

For sure, I'd rather see Bettman fuck off and let someone who has a sense on what a hockey market is.

Sun + Ice does not equal hockey. ;)

So when do we get to dump bettman off somewhere? or are we stuck with him for life?

when the owners decide hes not suitable for the job anymore. bettman takes the heat, but really, its the NHL owners who make the decisions for him.

lets review: an ownership group either A: buys an existing franchise and moves it, at which point the team owners vote to approve or deny the move. this is not bettman sitting at a desk saying "hmmm... yeah! lets move the jets to phoenix!"

B: a city, like atlanta, gets an ownership group together, gets the expansion funds, and applies for a team. then, the owners vote to allow expansion into said city.

for all of bettmans perceived faults, he is merely the collective voice of 30 owners. he does not, and has not ever made a decision on franchise location by himself. that being said, yes, the southern growth of the game was by design. but this was not his alone doing.

oh, and teams like tampa, florida, anaheim, were all existing prior to him becoming commissioner.

Bettman can only deny ownership groups from buying franchises, bit it's all up to the owners to vote to allow such a move to happen, isn't it also up to the owners to vote in new ownership groups and Bettman only has final say on such a thing?

It's the same in the NFL, if you buy a team and want to relocate, it needs to get approved by 75% or something of all NFL franchise owners also.

Bettman works for the NHL owners; not the other way around. It amuses me that people think he is some sort of independent rogue commisioner who does what he sees fit, regardless of the teams he represents.

Don't hate the playah; hate the game..........
