hang on here. hes still a hot commodity. i believe he was pursued by alot of NHL teams last summer, he wanted to go to russia to play.

he had a .922 save percentage last year, tops of his pretty illustrious career with 44 wins. i dunno, i dont believe "was" is the right word here. he was elite last year.

Elite goaltenders get signed in the NHL. They don't go unsigned when there are plenty of teams that need help in that department.

Elite goaltenders also don't get signed to barely over minimum salary contracts to come back to the NHL.

I thought I had remembered some info about Nabby from last summer so I went digging...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_d ... nhl-260835

Quote:
Nabokov talks about coming home to KHL, why league isn't 'step back'

The "step back" question triggered the following conversation between Nabokov and a reporter:

Nabokov: "It's very interesting, why does everyone always think that when you come back it's a step back?"

Reporter: I mean that the level of competition is a little different.

Nabokov: "Let me ask you, would you want to play for the Edmonton Oilers, for example?" [laughter] "Let me tell you that when you have a choice and you have something to choose from, you always want to play for a good team, compete for medals and such. I will speak for myself, but the situation was such that I had no choice of a good team to play for and to play at the high level. To me it was very important to play for a good team, to try to win."

I tried to find something listing the teams who had shown interest at the time, but all that turned up was when the Sharks told him they wouldn't be bringing him back, it kind of rubbed him the wrong way. I'll keep looking to see what I can drum up. But judging by his remarks about the Oilers, I'm sure he had a lot of teams following him around with contracts, but they were ones he wasn't willing to sign because he wanted to play for a winning team.

Edit: Although they've beaten our boys pretty bad with the exception of Sunday, I kind of hope the Isles win the cup or put on one hell of a drive just to rub it in his face

he was offered a contract by the blackhawks and flyers, i think. he choose to go to russia for more money. kinda like hudler and radulov and jagr.

edit: yup. the flyers offered him a contract and he declined. tampa bay and chicago were interested, not finding if he was offered a contract by them for sure.

he signed for twice what he would have made in the NHL.

He got signed for all that money, yet lasted 22 games in an inferior league.

hey, im not debating that. but his skills didnt go from a 44 win, .922 save percentage skillset in the NHL, to unable to perform in an inferior league like that. theres more to it then that. im going to bet on the pace of the game, but i cant prove that, just a theory.

anyways, nabby isnt finished, somethings just up.

edit: he wanted out of the KHL, or hockey, for family reasons. the split was mutual but according to what im reading, it wasnt because of his play.

Yeah, something is up.

He realized that playing in Russia wasn't what he thought it was going to be, and he wanted out. He then tried to strike a deal to guarantee himself a spot on a team looking for a cup, and lost. Now his ego is making him look like a fucktard.

My point is that he can't be an elite goaltender as you assert, yet still have been out of the league and in Russia as he was.

ill guess we will have to agree to disagree. i think his numbers are elite, and he wanted to play in russia for some bank. thats what i think.

i do agree his ego is making him look like a dick though.

i can see mike's argument, hes saying that he wasn't not signed in the nhl because he wasn't an elite goaltender, but because he wanted more money. he didnt leave this league because of skill, but because of contract. thats is how he is saying he is still an elite, yet playing out of the league.

He's just being a diva who wants to make some money and win a quick Cup. He feels entitled because he's been around in the league long enough and now he feels it's his turn to finally win a championship.

Nabokov wanted an upgrade to his $6M salary and by extension his $5.375M cap hit. That's why he wasn't resigned. If Ryan Miller was asking for too much money, no one would want him either.

Nabby better watch his step, and be nice to Mr. Snow. I've heard that Snow might be able to carry this contract over to next year, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to sit that out, too. If anyone is at fault here it's Meehan. Nabby should have known this was a strong possibility, and what the consequences could be.
