There is no way I'd want to ref in today's world of pro sports. Camera's from every angle, slow motion replay, etc.

It often takes reviewing plays several times, and in slow motion, to see if the referees were right or wrong. Let me repeat that; several angles, and in slow motion - and it often is still not clear. I think they are much better than they are given credit for.

Look at the France vs Ireland World Cup qualifier; Theiry Henry handled the ball on the goal that knocked out Ireland, and advanced France. The only one who may not have seen it were the officials.

Tough, tough endeaver - especially with today's technology. :hand:

Omg... Ok I could understand missing the first time, but how the hell does Toronto call and then the refs say its a no goal when it was blatently a goal... Makes you wonder if the game is fixed... idk... there are just some calls in all sports today that are absolutely ludicris that almost convince me that certain games, with high profile teams are fixed... its sad really

I am far less accepting of them blowing it in Toronto than I am to them making the wrong call on the ice......

I understand the wrong call on the ice, No one knew where the puck was which was true, but toronto blowing that call, everyone in charge should be fired from that call.

I know I'd go right up to those who where in charge that night and be like get the fuck out of my league if you're going to fuck up calls that bad, get out. And it's not an option to stay, YOU'RE FIRED.

The ref, LaRue, told Totonto that he intended to blow the play dead. Even though LaRue intended to blow the play dead after the puck crossed the goal line, and actually blew the whistle several seconds after, he didn't know just how bad his call was. He never saw a replay until after the game, or maybe on the scoreboard, but in any event he told Toronto that he intended the play to be dead. Once Toronto hears that the ref intended the play dead, no matter how late the whistle was, Toronto is out of the equation and never reviews the play.

The ref has it hard enough, don't get wrong - it was a bad call and I ABSOLUTELY HATE quick whistles. Nobody in Toronto with the video review could do anything about it though, so it wasn't their fault. The real fault lies with a messed up review procedure. The rules need changing so that refs allow a play to finish before blowing it dead (or even intending to blow it dead). The review process should be allowed to carry on regardless of what the ref did.

Last but not least, there should be some fairly simple technology put in place to allow an easy view of goal/no goal scenarios. A clear or semi-clear modified surface in the goal cage with a camera under the surface would allow an unobstructed view of almost every scenario possible. A very thin sheet of ice supported by plexi glass with a camera set underneath and angled toward the goal line would cost the same as the camera set on the back post of the cage, but be able to see any puck on ice level and exactly where it is compared to the goal line. Pads, sticks, and gloves could never obstuct the view of the puck at ice level from underneath. The vast majority of goal/no goal scenarios are with the puck at ice level, and the ice inside the cage is pretty much never used or skated on, so it would seem to be an easy solution.

Intent to blow a whistle counts as a blown whistle? If that rule is in the books, take it out right away. You do not want to open the door to officials being able to fix outcomes, or give fans a reason to doubt the legitimacy of the sport. By that awful logic, why not waive off a goal because the goalie INTENDED to save the puck but reacted late?

Not good. Not good at all.

ETC, I loved that last post.

Take away a goal because the goalie intended to make a save but didn't.

My favorite comment from that article:

"If only Bettman's mom had intent to blow, the NHL wouldn't be in this sorry state."
