THN.com Top 10: Calder candidates

"3. John Tavares, C, NY Islanders
The expected Calder winner isn’t doing anything to lose that mantle, it’s just his supporting cast is offering little support. Tavares, 19, leads all rookies and his team in scoring with 13 goals and 24 points and is seeing nearly 19 minutes of ice time per game as the No. 1 center for the 26th overall Islanders.

2. Tyler Myers, D, Buffalo
Likely the biggest surprise – if only because of the position he plays – Myers, 19, is eighth in rookie scoring with three goals and 15 points. More importantly, No Sabre plays more minutes than Myers and his team is one point out of the division lead with two games in hand. He kills penalties and plays the point on the power play; he’s even seen time stationed in front of the goal with the man advantage, a la Zdeno Chara.

1. Semyon Varlamov, G, Washington
When your team is in first place overall and you’re the starting goalie, there’s really no place a rookie can be other than at the top of the Calder race. Varlamov, 21, supplanted Jose Theodore as the Capitals’ No. 1 netminder during the playoffs last year, but had to battle to keep the spot this season. He won. Varlamov has played seven of the past 10 Caps games and has bettered his numbers to 12-1-2 with a 2.21 GAA and .924 SP. Forget the Calder, this guy is in the running for the Vezina...as long as he can stay healthy."

...Varlamov went down. It's still a bit early to judge - But, it's Myers' trophy to win. Provided he continues at, or improves, his current pace.

(Doing slight "happy dance", fingers crossed...)

We saw this last year with Schenn. Although Myers is putting up th points to go along wth his defensive play and boat loads of minutes. This year's class I think is the best we've seen in a long time.

Thanks for posting this Ice.

Aren't Varlamov and Theodore tied for starting position?
Anyway, Myers has been the bigger asset for his team.

Varly is the young talented goaltender that Washington desperately needed, and he's definately delivering. However, Myers is the solid young defensemen that we desperately needed and if ice time is any indication, he's proving it.

Basically, it'll come down to whoever keeps it going longer I think.

Well Those are three of the top for sure.

Tavares is living up to the hype basically, Myers is over-exceeding any and all expectations, and Varly, well he is lucky to have the supporting cast of Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, and Green.

Courtesy of Rotowire.com:

"Varlamov (lower-body) is hurt and considered day-to-day, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Varlamov, who has a history of lower-body injuries, is not skating Wednesday. The Caps recalled Michal Neuvirth for insurance and it would seem that Jose Theodore will get the start in net Wednesday. Head coach Bruce Boudreau seemed optimistic, saying he hopes Varlamov will be able to skate Friday and play in Toronto on Saturday."

I think Jose Theodore is as good as Varlamov. Maybe an edge to Varlamov, but he does have a bright future. Doesn't affect the Caps much.

If Tavares keeps up his current pace and scores 40 goals this season, then there is just no way he won't win the Calder. The way he's playing right now, he's got to be considered the favourite.

But if a 19 year old defensmen who is 6'8 scores 45 or more points, how could you not consider that for the Calder front runner?

Especially considering Defense is harder to play than offense, and if he ends up a plus, all while playing 22 or more minutes a game?

I say Tavares would have to score 50 goals and have 100 points to overtake the Calder if Myers can put up 45+ points and be around a 10 +/-

If Myers scores 10 goals and 45 points and is a +10 at the end of the season, then he will give Tavares a serious run for his Calder money. But at this point, Tavares is still the forerunner.

He deserves the Norris.

I'll say it right now - if Myers somehow, somehow eclipses 15 goals and 60 points (which would be nigh unheard-of for a rookie d-man), I can guarantee you his name is mentioned in Norris conversations. But he'll have to have a light's-out season from here on out.

He won't get a Norris yet. Yet is the keyword right now.

I don't care if Myers gets the Calder. The only thing that would excite me about that would be the fact that he would have to continue to play well, or even improve, to earn it. And that would be the biggest prize of all.

I do want a Norris, would be a first for Buffalo though.
