So where's Mathieu Schneider?

"For the third straight day, veteran defenceman Mathieu Schneider was not at Canuck practice, his absence being explained as a "personal matter" by the club. Naturally, this raised the question: Has Schneider grown disenchanted with his limited role in Vancouver? The 40-year-old has been a healthy scratch 8 times since being activated on Oct. 25. Last Thursday, I saw him in a very animated discussion with Dave Gagner, the Canucks director of player development, following a practice in which he was the first player off the ice. GM Mike Gillis, Schneider's former agent, would not shed any light Tuesday on Schneider's absence. "Well, it's a personal matter, really," Gillis replied when I asked him whether Schneider was contemplating his future with the club, or if his absence was due to a family issue. I am betting it's the former, not the latter, but I have been wrong before..."

We could use a player of his ilk to help with our powerplay. I imagine Vancouver would want another defenseman in return, to maintain their depth there. Paetsch because of his salary may fit the bill.

He's on a one year contract; so if he doesn't work out, it's not like we have to live with the deal, and I believe Paetsch is an UFA at deason's end - though I could be wrong, I don't look these things up........

It is about time, the guy should have quit 10 years ago.

Quit ten years ago? He had his best offensive seasons in Detroit three or four years back. Mind you, with Detroit's star power at that point, I'm sure his stats were greatly enhanced.

He's no savior, but I think he could only help our power play.

Anyone who is an offensive d-man can help this powerplay.

CANUCKS PLACE VETERAN D SCHNEIDER ON WAIVERS

"It might be a sign that Mathieu Schneider's playing days in the NHL are nearing an end.

On Tuesday, the Vancouver Canucks placed the 40-year old blueliner on waivers, where can be claimed by any club prior to Noon et on Wednesday. If he clears waivers, the Canucks can opt to send him down to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

In 17 games this season, Schneider has two goals and three assists. He missed 10 games in October and November when he required shoulder surgery.

He was signed by the Canucks as an unrestricted free agent last summer to a one-year deal worth $1.55 million. His stop in Vancouver marks his ninth club over 19 seasons in the league. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1987, and has a long resume that includes a Stanley Cup win with the Habs in 1993, along with appearances in two Olympics and two World Cups for Team USA."

Claim him, ditch Sekera (who's newly-minted Olympic status adds some value) in a deal, and our PP improves by a far margin. Given that is the Sabres' one true weakness, the team would benefit exponentially by the addition of Schneider.

Andrej Sekera's shot is poetry on slow motion....... :?

I'm sure every fan want their team to pick him up. What will his cap hit be?

I dunno phil, schneider hasn't looked great the past few years and it's only going to be downhill from here.

...well. He's got a half a season left - that's about three-quarter of a mil. Just to QB the powerplay?

That's a stiff price to pay - But a low-cap team like CBJ or NSH (or PHX) could afford and use him, to drive for the playoffs. Consider it an investment that may pay out in a post-season berth, and the associated ticket and merchandise sales.

I don't think he's quite done - But, he may be a bit rusty. Look at Markov; since returning he's done absolute wonders with the MTL PP...

It's a crap-shoot.

It's just for the rest of this season. His contract is up this year. I'd take the gamble.

Who would be the odd man out, though? I'm certainly not comfortable with Schneider doing anything other than playing on the PP. It would improve our PP, but if he played any place other than that, it would hurt us.

Kinda frustrating.

He wouldn't be any worse than Sekera who...has...been playing forward when possible as the odd defenseman out...shit

Sekera is 23, and Schneider is 40. There's still hope for Andrej, but Schneider ain't getting any better.

Buffalo does not need an old fart on the team.
