Dubinsky agrees on two-year deal with Rangers

"Restricted free agent Brandon Dubinsky ended his holdout Saturday, signing a two-year deal worth a reported $3.7 million US with the New York Rangers.

The 23-year-old recorded 13 goals and 28 assists last season and has been tagged to centre prized free-agent signing Marian Gaborik on the Rangers' top line this season.

According to the New York Daily News, Rangers GM Glen Sather tabled a qualifying offer of $522,000 US back in June but refused to sweeten the deal for a player he had described as "capable of being a No.1 center."

Three months later, talks between Sather and Dubinsky's agent, Kurt Overhardt, had hit an impasse and Dubinsky was forced to miss the opening of training camp last weekend, an absence which drew the ire of head coach John Tortorella, before finally agreeing on a deal Saturday."

Good for the Rags - This kid could be money, in coming years.

Kind of odd that they projected him as a number-one center, yet refused to budge from a baseline offer. Playing hardball, I guess.

Apparently Torts threw a bit of a fit ("Stupid...stupid.") regarding the kid missing time at camp despite not having signed. That may have accelerated the closing of the deal.

He is still a work in progress; could be a good one, though...

Does he think he deserved more money? Is that the reason he was holding out?

The guys on MSG the other night said that the Rags camp has been evil - that a survivor of several of Tortorella's camps in TB (Vinny Prospal, maybe?) has been losing sleep, in dread of the next day's practice.

Dubs is missing out on all the fun :puke-right:, and Torts probably can't wait to get him up to speed.
