Commentator for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He's now decided that people who disagree with him are part of "the hockey Taliban". He didn't coin that reference, but he continues to use it, which I think is pretty disgusting.

This column is anti-NHL participation in the Olympics. He thinks that the ONLY reason the NHL is in the Olympics is for attention. While that's certainly part of it, he ignores the logical argument that the NHLPA wanted to be in the Olympics for their players sake too.

Seems like the Jerry Sullivan of Pittsburgh with a smaller vocabulary.

to me, the most coveted award is the cup, yes. but, nhl players should be allowed to participate in the olympics. if members of the NHLPA are forbidden that right, pull a michael jordan, and dont join the players association.

I tend to agree with his point, though. I really don't like having NHL players in the Olympics...so much more enjoyable watching the purity of the kids than millionaire pros I see every night on Center Ice. Plus, it really fucks up the mojo of the NHL hockey season.

The Olympics are supposed to be a showcase of the best athletes a country can produce.
I never agreed with the argument that professional ones should be excluded for any sport.

That's why 1980 was a miracle...the Soviet team *was*, basically, a professional team.

That's how I feel as well.

The NHL was open to having the players do it. The players voted to participate, even though the vast majority of them would never been named to their respective national squads.

Smizik's argument is trash.

Aren't the olympics kind of like peewee hockey with a lack of fighting and grittiness?
