"Ultimately, we offered Kovy more than $101 million over 12 years, which would have been the highest contract signed by an impending unrestricted free agent in the history of the league," Waddell said in the statement. "If accepted, this contract would have been the second-highest offer ever to any NHL player. We also met his desire to be the highest-paid player based on average annual salary with a separate offer of seven years at $10 million per year ($70 M). This offer is $0.5 million higher per year than any other player.

He will be a cancer to any NHL team he goes to.

Now heres a guy I could see in a Sabres uniform. I have, from time to time, wondered what the meeting between Ruff and Ovechkin would be like if Ovechkin was traded to the Sabres.

There is a person (or more than one) who makes these funny videos in which Hitler is ranting about this or that. He's ranted about the Leafs, the Bills, T.O.... get the idea? It's a clip from some movie or other and the subtitles all pertain to the latest rant. I bet someone puts up a link shortly. ;)

i bet he's looking to go into the KHL. only team in the NHL that might fork over that kind of money is the rags and i don't think they'll go for him.

He's not turning down the offer because of the money. He's turning down the offer cause the club's future is in question. If he signs for 12 years then he wants to be in Atlanta for 12 years. Not in Atl for 3 years and then get moved to Winnipeg for the next nine.

Guys, come on. Who would want to play in Atlanta? I mean, seriously. I don't blame him one bit.

That's a pretty grandiose assumption, and I don't think it has much merit.

The Thrashers, even though fan support blows, are in better financial condition than other teams down south. They haven't even been mentioned in relocation rumors.

I'm pretty sure Kovie doesn't give a shit where he plays as long as he makes the money he wants.

I don't blame him for wanting to leave there. But if those were his intentions from the beginning, as their star player, shouldn't he have told management that a long time ago? That he was going to be leaving either if they traded him or if he would walk at seasons end. Either if he did this, or turned down the money as he has, some will still look at him for being a douchebag so why not just let them know so they can prepare for the loss?

he may have sweet hands, but I wouldn't want his ego in the locker room.

Here's a good question.

If you're Waddel, wouldn't you benefit more withholding that information until AFTER you make the trade, in order to retain maximum return?

Meaning, some managers might be turned off if they realize there is no hope of resigning him at the end of the season without coughing up some serious cash.
