Six games around the NHL today, to finish out the schedule before the Olympic break. None are more important to the Sabres than Ottawa playing the Islanders at 5:00.

Nashville @ Pittsburgh, 1pm
Tampa @ NY Rangers, 1pm
Vancouver @ Minnesota, 3pm
Ottawa @ Islanders, 5pm
Chicago @ Columbus, 5pm
Anaheim @ Edmonton, 7pm

Happy Valentines Day, folks. Here's hoping Ottawa's Brian Eliot is a real sweetheart and speads his legs all day for the Islanders.

Anyone else going to watch this game (Sens v Isles)? I don't think I'll ever route for the Isles this hard again!!!

Beat the Sens - give us a one point lead and three games in hand after the break!!!

I dont want to jinx them, but the Islanders are up on the Sens, 2-1, midway through the game.

Ruutu has their only goal.

But seriously, does anyone think it might be better for the Sabres if the Senators win and we miss the playoffs?

Yeah, I would love to see the Sens win and we miss the playoffs. It may force Darcy's hand in bringing in that piece they need.... ;)

You can make fun of that concept all you want, but you won't see a cup as long as Darcy remains confident with the current roster.

Shortsighted = YEAH, A SINGLE WIN!!! Darcy's validated!
The BIG Picture = Darcy has MORE pressure to make a change.

This concept escapes many here, but it makes long-term sense.

Encouraging a culture of losing does not make sense under any circumstances. To think otherwise does a disservice to those that honor the game so.

ONCE AND FOR ALL...

I NEVER said anything about losing on purpose...or tanking...or (my personal fav) "encouraging a culture of losing"(where'd THAT come from?)...or anything else that would lead to a loss. Get it? Shall I say it again?

ALL I SAID (now pay attention)...is that IF they had lost to the Sharks, the advantage would've been that it may have been the final straw for Darcy & Co. to chew on during the break, leading up to the trade deadline.

The simplisitc view is: NO! A win is a win. A win is THE most important thing at ALL times!

Okay. I understand. Most fans are about immediate satisfaction and a win, no matter the circumstance, is always preferable, no matter what the long term ramifications. I'm just pointing out that there would've been an upside to a loss in that situation.

You either get it or you don't.

Enough already.

Neither did I. I'll reiterate. Creating a culture in which losing is acceptable will never help a team no matter what the circumstances, nor how it might supposedly help "long term."

The Boston Red Sox took 86 years to win a title because they couldn't get over the losing culture that permeated throughout the city. Ditto the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, etc. There is never an upside in losing. You can cite draft picks and so-called "wake up calls" as much as you want, but at the end of the day you never want your team thinking that the fans are satisfied with, or even encouraged by a loss. Never.

The fact that your statement is so widely ridiculed here should clue you in a little bit.
