http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=316729 James, the guy who was diddling Theo Fleury and Sheldon Kennedy, was apparently secretly pardoned for his crimes back in 1997, and that fact is just now coming out. Most of Canada seems to be pretty up in arms about this, and rightfully so in my opinion. |

Maybe a Canadian can help me understand a couple things. Why the hell can a parole board "pardon" a criminal. Quote: James was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison in 1997 Is that a standard sentence for child molesters in Canada? Seems about 10X too light to me. OK, maybe 3.5 years with castration, 30 years without. |

OK, maybe 3.5 years with castration, 30 years without. That seems to be the standard sentence for pretty much any crime in Canada. We also have the not-so-popular (for good reason) "2 for 1" credit, where the time somebody serves in custody before their trial it multiplied by 2 and goes towards your sentence. Example: Somebody convicted of 2nd degree murder gets 10 years in prison. They served 3 years in custody before the trial, that would count as 6 years out of their 10 year sentence. There's also "statutory release", where a convict can be let out after serving 2/3rds of their sentence. Apparently this is happening because of our overcrowded prisons, so instead of building more, it's just a better idea to shorten sentences and let convicted criminals back into society, whether their rehabilitated of not. Make any sense to you? Me either.... Quite often on the news up here, there are "warnings" about convicted sex offenders that are being let out of prison because their sentences have been served. They are still considered highly dangerous individuals and are a high risk to re-offend, but apparently it's not fair to the offender if we don't let him out... So yes, the whole pardon thing with James is sickening, but in reality, it's just par for the course up here... |

Wow...sorry to hear about the injustice system you've got rolling up there. We can loan you some Texas judges if you'd like to balance it out a bit better. |
