The Carolina Hurricanes reportedly have signed goaltender Cam Ward to a new six-year, $37.8 million contract extension. According to a report on TSN, the team will make it official at a news conference Wednesday. The team had planned for what it termed as a major announcement regarding a player. Ward had his best NHL season in 2008-09, setting career bests with 39 wins, a 2.44 goals-against average, .916 save percentage and six shutouts. He followed that by backstopping the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference Finals. The 25th pick of the 2002 Entry Draft made his first NHL impact in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when he replaced starter Martin Gerber and guided the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup. One time I was at a Sabres-Canes game and this one guy was trying to taunt Ward, but he couldn't figure out how to do it since both 'Cam' and 'Ward' are one syllable, so he just started chanting, "goal-ieeeee". |
