THN.com's Campbell's Cuts: NHL facing glut of potential for-sale teams

Quote:
Another situation that bears watching is the New York Islanders. Reports that owner Charles Wang is ready to walk away from the franchise appear to be a little premature, but there is little doubt he is running out of patience. The Lighthouse Project, which would have given the Islanders a new arena and revitalized the area, looks like it will be scaled back considerably if it even sees the light of day.

Wang has lost millions over the past 10 years and might not be willing to wait another 10 years to get a new building. Waiting in the wings is New York Mets owner Jeffrey Wilpon, who could buy the team and move it to a new arena near the Mets’ new Citi Field.

Just speculation on Campell's part, but if it happens, I like it.

Turns out this is more than just speculation. The exec. veep of the Borough of Queens' chamber of commerce last year announced his desire to turn the stretch of garages and repair shops across the street from Citi Field into a hockey arena for the Islanders.

Ken Campbell isn't the first writer to suggest the Wilpons as possible future owners of the Islanders, either.

I'd like to see a good Isle team, and if he could make them better, I'm all for it.

Might be a good first step in resurrecting that franchise.

I'm mobile so I'm not gonna bother linking, but Pro Hockey Talk has excerpts from a Newsday article that reveals Wang and Wilpon have been talking about moving the Isles to Queens after all.
