Holy shit, Willie Mitchell isn't being fined for calling Colie Campbell out.

But in all seriousness, yea, it's a very good thing even one player has spoken out against how inconsistent everything has been, especially this season. If it warrants change for the better, then we have Willie Mitchell for raising his voice. But if it doesn't change or it gets worse, then his efforts would be in vain.

This league is defined by inconsistency! My friend (a non-hockey guy) was watching a game and he said to me "Why did that guy get a penalty for what the other team has done a dozen times?".

This season I saw so many dirty hits and none of them were called with the same cut and dry rule that they should be. A guy does THIS and he faces THESE consequences. Seems easy but what I see from Colin Campbell is a weighing of player popularity, player impact for their team, obviousness of the hit (can we ignore it), damage done, who the damage was done to, past infractions, importance of the game or upcoming games, along with other factors I'm sure. This is crap. There should be a consistent base action for the dirty hits and then added penalties or fines depending on severity or habitualness perhaps. For example, dirty hit = two game suspension and fine. Repeat offenders get an extra game or steeper fines for instance. Seems if it's a big game or the guy is a star then the slap is slight (except OV's nasty hit on Soupy which was too obvious and nasty to sweep under the rug).

It also doesn't help that Campbell is friends with a number of owners and GMs.

Haha cuz you've only got 161 posts. Last month, X asked us to come up with ranks and corresponding post totals, and I came up with a list of like 15 ranks and such.

Also, don't ever change your Lion-O avatar. Ever.

Biggest shitbag response ever.

Quote:
"Willie Mitchell has been involved with me more than once in is own discipline situations so he should understand both sides of the equation," Campbell said.

I still like my plan... you hit someone illegally ... blind side, head shot, what ever... if you blast someone like that, you are suspended for as long as that player is out injured plus 5 games.

If the player hit is not injured past the night he took the hit, your simply out for 5 games... thats it... you injure someone on an illegal action, you are suspended for as long as you hurt that player, plus 5 games.... done... no whining, no appeal... man up and take what you deserve....

I think that's a great plan of action, and the awesome side-effect would be the league being unable to skirt the supplemental discipline when a star player is the offending individual.

but I guess the start of the problem is the inconsistency of what is considered a garbage or punishable hit... ok, than how about a 3 person panel to determine if the hit was in fact punishable... a player rep.... and NHL rep (campbell works)... and Chuck Norris.... majority wins... if its determined said hit is garbage.... than your done for as long as you injured the player plus 5 games...

exactly... and you could even take it a step further... Im to lazy to look up all the facts here, but a perfect example is Ovi.... Ovi was suspended twice this season? or 3 times? so now we have a multiple offender...

First, how many games was Ovi suspended? -- I not sure on this...

In my system...

First offense -- Ovi hits player A... Ovi is out for as long as player A is injured plus 5 games

Second offense -- Ovi hits player B... Ovis is out for as long as player B is injured plus 10 games

Thrid Offense -- Ovi hit player C... Ovis is out for as long as player C is injured plus 15 games...

So how many games Ovi would actually miss, would be dependent on how long the players he hurt were out... plus the mandatory suspension...

The other question is, say Ovi puts someone out for the year... Do you suspend Ovi for the year? I'd almost have to say yes.... but you can put a cap, a year ending injury is 25 games mandatory... and can roll into the next season...

I hope Ovi would get the hint that garbage hits will not be allowed after the first offense... but punishment should escalate if they are not getting the message...

the problem with the "injured IR time +" thinking is that not all hits in which someone is injured are illegal/dirty.

say that kaleta checks gomez. its not an illegal hit or even a particularly violent hit but when gomez goes down he hits his shoulder on the ice and cracks his collar bone and is out 4-6 weeks at least. with kaleta being suspended previously, should be be forced to loose almost 2 months because gomez was unlucky?

this is just an example of why an idea like that (regardless of how good it sounds) will never work.

I think some players would take advantage of that and stay out longer than they would have due to the bets player be the offender.

I agree also with the whole injury plus wouldn't work.

If the hit is illegal automatic 10 games, no matter if injury is caused or not. Simple way to prevent illegal hits. You commit one you're suspended.

Yeah I'm not really a fan of potential bad callas taking players off the ice. I think the reviewing system needs to change. You can change the penalties and fines and suspensions as much as you want, but if you've still got the same dumbasses looking at things, nothing is going to change.

My idea?
Execute everyone involved with the league over the age of 50 that clings to the urban legend of "old time hockey," and bring in people that are just going to call it as they see it, not adhere to some bullshit sense of nobility.

the problem with that is everyone who they bring in is going to have some kind of slanted view of things. no one is going to be able to call it black and white.

my solution:

give each major penalty 10 criteria that need to be met.
if anyone of the points are met, its the standard penalty called in game, fine whatever
meet 3 criteria, your out for a game
meet 5 criteria, your out for 2 games
meet 7 criteria, your our for 3 games
meet 8 and up, your out for 6 games (this assuming that the injured player is pretty much fucked)

now, i dont know how you would come up 10 different points for each major penalty but im sure you could. the points would also be black and white, not interpretation, no loop hole saying that "its at so-and-sos decision." plain as day, black and white.

im sure theres some flaw in my idea but i think its a solid frame.
