While outdoor hockey may well be the last thing on fans minds at the moment, the NHL will formally announce the locations of dual Winter Classic games next season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will host the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field on New Year's Day, while the Montreal Canadiens will travel to Calgary sometime in February to face the Flames at McMahon Stadium.

This will be the second time that a Canadian city has hosted an outdoor game after Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium set the standard in the inaugural Winter Classic between the Oilers and Canadiens in 2003.

This will also be the second time that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been involved in the Winter Classic after they faced the Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008.

I'm not sure how I feel about two Winter Classics in one season. I love Calgary getting a Winter Classic. I hate that Pittsburgh is playing in their second Winter Classic in four years

I don't mind any of it. Pittsburg is going to get smoked and they'll know how it felt for us to lose at home for such an event... Except ours was much closer.

Hahaha well, well, well. With all of these sour grapes, we could make a bottle of...whine...per sey? LOL

I'm totally going to this one despite the fact that Bettman is a whore and I'm not rooting for either team! Hey, it's in my backyard and I missed the one in Buffalo! Two once in a lifetime opportunities, lucky me, I'm not missing this one!

omg the ~Canada Classic~...so lame. And that's cool that Pittsburgh gets to play again...not like there's 22 other teams that haven't participated in a Winter Classic yet. Whateves...I didn't even watch last years.

Egh I think if you can't keep snow for more than a couple weeks you shouldn't have a chance to play in the Classic.

Sorry San Jose, Anaheim, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Carolina, Florida, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Nashville, Washington, and does it snow in St. Louis?

Good news is there's still 12 American teams left. Buffalo, Minnesota (which should have played in the second classic), Philadelphia, Boston, NYR, NYI, NJD (pass on those three), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Colorado, and Columbus.

Buffalo - Pittsburgh
Chicago - Detroit
Philadelphia - Boston
Pittsburgh - Washington

I'd definitely go for Minnesota - Colorado.

I do kinda like the idea that they're moving the New Years game back to a football stadium. You'd wish they spread things around a bit more to get more teams involved, but Pittsburgh was going to get a game eventually. Now, if the Pens end up playing in ANOTHER Classic...I'll probably get more salty about it.

I don't have a problem with a 2nd game outside either. Hockey Day in Canada has always been big, and as long as they don't mess with the New Years game by trying to pull off a doubleheader, I'm cool with it.

Why should Pittsburgh get a SECOND winter classic? So many other teams haven't gotten one yet!

(NO SARCASM)

I have a healthy yet irrational hate for Cindy so This pisses me off.
It's like Bettman is allergic to Canada...Seriously, WTF?

We've done this 4 times, there are 30 teams and one is repeating already?
What a crock.

I vote for a Vancouver - Buffalo winter classic. lol

Both teams entered in 1970.
Both teams still don't have a cup.
Id say a pretty good matchup....

It gets worse.

Washington has already been promised to get a Winter Classic.

Bettman also added that he plans for Washington to host an outdoor game in the next few years. The Caps' participation in the 2011 Winter Classic may also be a good omen for the team, which was ousted in the first round of the playoffs after winning the Presidents' Trophy in the regular season. In each of the previous three Winter Classics, the road team has gone on to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

"We are excited to participate in not only the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic but also are pleased that the NHL has agreed to play a future outdoor game in the D.C. area," Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said. "Our organization is extremely appreciative of Commissioner Bettman's efforts and that he recognized our intense desire to have our great fan base and the D.C. area enjoy all the benefits associated with an outdoor game."

I like this match up but I dont think Washington needs another after this either.

goddamnitsomuch....

So, let's see...Bettman is 58 years old. The average life expectancy for a healthy American male is 75.6. Since there have never been signs of him being tossed, we could possible be inflicted with another 17+ years of this mans asshattery.

and an outdoor game in DC?
eff it Gary...put one in Dallas...it's a big market doncha know.

Be sour all you want but watching 4 of the best forwards in the NHL square off is going to be entertaining. Not to mention Gonchar, Green, Staal and Semin

Any 2 teams can produce an entertaining or boring game on any day.

This is about the leagues hard-on for wonderboy.
