UPDATE: After the trade, both were bought out by their new clubs. WTF.

2nd UPDATE: Vandemeer isn't being bought out in EDM, but O'Sullivan is in PHX.

I think, and I haven't crunched the numbers yet, that by sending Vandermeer packing and getting O'Sullivan back, they have less of a buy-out obligation on their hands.

I just checked Cap Geek and that is indeed why they did it. They got a solid, tough player in return for forcing PHX to buy-out O'Sullivan instead of doing it themselves and taking a hit.

I'm sure money figures into it somehow, but apparently EDM is happy with Vandemeer. If that's true then PHX could have literally given him away, let alone gotten an actual asset in return, and saved the cost of buying him out. I still can't figure it out. Therefore until someone figures it out for me, I declare COLLUSION!!!

Seeing the Yotes getting O'sullivan makes no sense to me, the guy has been shit ever since he's been in the NHL.

OK, what happened was, Edmonton sent O'Sullivan to Phoenix and got Vandemeer in return because both players got waived but neither team wanted to pay the buyout cost. Phoenix spent less money buying out Sullivan than they would have Vandemeer, and Edmonton kept Vandemeer for a bottom six role which means they didn't have to buy anyone out.

Edmonton got a grinder and Phoenix got to pay less in buy-out costs. Win-win.
