Not exactly a technological breakthrough.

It's not really the net on top that distorts the view. This is retarded.

It kind of helps the booth review of a goal... But not much.

move a camera to the top shelf of the net that points down on the goal line. problem solved.

Until Stamkos tags it.

That would look a bit odd, wouldn't it?

so put it IN the crossbars; use a fiber optic cable (split) to both sides of the goal (pointing inwards) and then angle it down. seriously can't be that effin difficult.

no more odd then that experiment. they have been putting cameras in nets for years, theyll be fine.

I still think they should put sensors in the pucks and on the lines where if the two sensors in the puck cross the line then it is officially a goal. etc etc.

There are about a zillion different, totally valid ways they could know for sure whether or not the puck has crossed the plane of the goal line...it must mean something that they dont even take the most rudimentary steps towards that end.

What if it hits the goal line and doesn't cross? It seems like that would cause A LOT of controversy over goals.

What I was thinking was, if the entire outside of the puck had the sensor and the line with the other sensor was on the very back edge of the goal line, and in order for the goal light to go off both sides of the sensor had to cross that bottom goal line in order to go off, so if both crossed the whole puck would be in the net.

They have cameras small enough to fit inside the crossbar, so do it already.

I know, they could literally have tiny holes drilled every 4-6 inches going all the way around the the inside of the front of the net. Providing every angle imaginable at a close up view. If one camera is too close, another one certainly isn't. China is making buses that fit 1,400 people, don't burn fossil fuel, and ride over cars. The NHL has just discovered plexi-glass.

I believe the reason the NHL doesn't do this is twofold. I remember reading a while back about how a net sensor would be impossible because the sensor field generated by the two outputs on either side would extend beyond the crossbars, but I'm not a physicist so I really have no idea.

Also, you'd have to have some sort of chip in the puck, and last time that happened, the pucks couldn;t be frozen and players complained about their playability.

Plus it can be cheap to do that and quite a few pucks go out of play, well I guess the can just track down the puck and steal it from the bastard who caught it

It can't be in the crossbar only. A goaltender could back up to make a save and obscure the view.

They would need to have cameras in the crossbar, both posts, and in the back center post. This shouldn't be that hard, but they certainly try to make it that way.

How about burying a bunch of cameras along the line?

I've said this before: RFID chip in the puck.
They're cheap, fairly indestructible, accurate, wouldn't require any silly cosmetic changes and would eliminate the goal judge for good (WTF does that guy do besides flip a switch anyway).

EDIT: the NFL is already kicking around that idea to track both players and the ball.
