Good looking building from that shot at least. I had read they were going to pull things in a bit and get everyone closer to the ice like the older style buildings, and that looks a bit expansive. Maybe it's the camera angle, I dunno. Looking forward to road tripping down there sometime and checking it out. |

i dont see how its not. that team sucked, and was on the verge of moving, no matter what mario says. |

Mario had every intention of keeping that team in Pittsburgh. The threats of moving were only leverage. He's said this publicly quite a few times. |

i dont buy it for one second. not one. never have. if you are sleazy enough to threaten a move if you dont get your way, you are sleazy enough to follow though with it. |

ironyisadeadscene wrote: well, without him, Pittsburgh wouldnt have a team. Nah, that's not accurate at all. Winning the Crosby lottery certainly didn't hurt matters in the least, but he did not give them anymore leverage at all. |

I think if you can take anyone in the NHL at their word, Mario would be the guy. But hey, whatever floats your boat man. Threatening a franchise move is pretty much a standard negotiating tactic these days. |

They cried and bitched and made threats and even threatened to sell the team to Ballsillie who would have surely moved it up north. Classless, sleazy, but 100% necessary. Governor Randell only cares about Philadelphia, if they didn't make a stink about it and get the rabble riled up it would not have gotten done. Period. |

so, say he gives the city the ultimatum. mario: "were going to move unless we get a new arena" city: "tough shit. no arena." mario: "ok, i was lying anyways" not a snowballs chance in hell. that team was bleeding money like a stuck pig. if that arena doesnt get built, that teams playing elsewhere. and if crosby doesnt go to pittsburgh, the arena doesnt get built. that is absolutely how i see it. mario just tried to save face. |

That's fine, you can see it wrong for the rest of your life for all I care. Fact is Crosby didn't save anything, in fact all the heavy lifting was done before they won the lottery. Randell already had Plan B in place which all but ensured the arena would get built no matter WHO got the casino. You see, the Penguins wanted a new arena built but it was mainly leverage so they could get a casino and make REAL money. Threatening to move the franchise was leverage used to win the gambling license, Randell defused that BUT the Penguins media kept their foot on the gas because THEY WANTED THE GAMBLING LICENSE. But the fact remains that Crosby had 80% jack and 20% shit to do with the entire process and he was not used as leverage AT ALL-FOR THE ARENA. |

all the heavy lifting was done prior to the 05 lottery? http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2720130 this was in 07. i believe the reality of that team moving was very very very real. especially seeing kansas city offered their brand new arena, rent free. and of course crosby wasnt used in the process. but he certainly created a stir and thus, a demand for pittsburgh hockey. |

They had Plan B in place. That meant that whoever won the gambling license would have to include a new arena in their proposal. If that wasn't announced 05' it was shortly after. But the Penguins certainly kept on bitching about it right up until the Casino winer was announced. The Plan B was a victory that was swept under the carpet and replaced with relentless uncertainty towards dim witted Pens fans. Why? Because they wanted the Casino license. No, he didn't create a stir. Most people in Pittsburgh didn't even know what the fuck the big deal was about Sidney Crosby until he played half a season. This isn't Montreal, or even Buffalo. This is a football town, and the majority of the voters wouldn't give two shits if the Penguins left town. The Penguins made leaving town about the arena and what it can do, the concerts, the circus, etc.. Stuff that effects people who don't care about hockey. If they left there would not be a primary tenant for an arena, which means no arena. Dude, when the team sucks again, they wont sell out that new arena. Pittsburghers are only as loyal to hockey as the bang for their buck goes. Right now the Penguins are hot shit and the ticket prices are jacked up and they are selling out like crazy, have been for years. But when they suck, they will immediately start lowering prices because people will QUICKLY bail. Same thing with the Steelers? LOL uhhhh no. My brother is literally a millionaire, and he had to wait 16 years to get his season tickets. The Steelers are a world wide franchise that is so deeply rooted in Pittsburgh that they could triple the current ticket prices and cut Big Ben and they would still sellout. |
