Aren't the Rangers well over the cap? Or am I thinking of some other team?

Yea, they're over by 3+M. Looks like ole Wade Redden is headed for waivers.

They're allowed to be over the salary cap until a certain point of the pre-season. I'll have to look for the specific date.

I like this deal cuz it sets good precedent for Doughty, whose extension will set good precedent for Myers.

No, the Staals have a daughter. Her name is Eric.

I can see where you're coming from. That said, I think Doughty and Myers are different cases because they're both potential cornerstones of their respective teams for years to come. I'm not sure I'd put Staal in the same category, meaning #1 defenseman. (Boy I hope we're not heaping too much praise on Myers too soon)

Agreed Staal is probably not a number one d-man, simply because he doesn't have a spectacular quality about his game. For example is how Shea Weber has a shot from the point, or Chris Pronger has unbeatable toughness, or Mike Green's offensive ability.

He's a REALLY good defensive player, and he's smart with the puck. Being a long time hockey fan I'm still amazed at how much money these young guys keep getting! 20 years ago, 4 million would buy you Ray Bourque!

You got to remember inflation on everything.

20 years ago 4 million bought you Ray Bourque, but if you had him now, he would command 10 million easily.
