Big changes for goalies next season when it comes to equipment, as UniWatch discovered from a source at Bauer: "Starting next year goalies will be required to use pads that are measured and fitted to them by the NHL. It won't be a big change for the bigger guys, but smaller goalies who've been using bigger pads will feel the crunch." Again: Why did this take so long? Why did we waste time debating changing the cage before doing something this elementary?

My recent ESPN column about goalie pads prompted an interesting note from Mark Coale. “I was listening to HNIC radio the other day and they said goalie pads next season will be based on the goalies’ individual measurements,” he wrote. “They said former goalie and now league employee Kay Whitmore will spend the season going around and getting metrics on every goalie, so things will be custom-made for next year.”

This was news to me, so I went back to Tyler Hull, who works for Bauer and is the guy who provided me with all the info for that ESPN column to begin with. Here’s his very informative response:

Mark is correct. In 2003 the league limited the size of a goalie pad to 38 inches high, but goalies can use that size any way they want. Pads are measured from the inside of your ankle to your knee and then from your knee to the top of your thigh, so goalies often add “thigh rise” (i.e., extra pad) to the top to get to the 38-inch limit if they want them that high. A shorter goalie might use a 33+5 pad, or a taller goalie might use 37+1, depending on the original size of the pad and how tall the goalie is (or at least how long his legs are). The end result is that Chris Osgood and Steve Valiquette end up using the same size pad, even though one of them is 5′11″ and the other one is 6′5″.

That’s just plain goofy, so starting next year goalies will be required to use pads that are measured and fitted to them by the NHL. It won’t be a big change for the bigger guys, but smaller goalies who’ve been using bigger pads will feel the crunch.

Faaaaascinating. On the one hand, this makes sense: Smaller goalie, smaller pads. On the other hand, a shorter goalie already has a built-in disadvantage, since there’s literally less of him to cover the net, and now that shorter goalie will have the bonus disadvantage of having less pad coverage. Hmmmm — discuss.

i like the bit at the end of the article, about how smaller goalies are already at a disadvantage, now this. how do you think this will effect buffalo in the future, with Enroth being a smaller goalie.

Well this is going to make teams go back to the trap it up so no shots be taken on our goalie, or really show the skill of some of these goalies.

I honestly think goalies won't be too affected, there can't be a huge disparity in the sizes from a 5'10 goalie to a guy who is 6'5.

The width will be the same, and the heights might vary a few inches.

Less pads means more speed? Well Enroth is already plenty zippy, so I'd imagine he'd be OK. And besides - how much better, at 6'5", is Valiquette anyways?

And millions of fantasy owners everywhere move Henrik Lundqvist to the bottom of their list.

Ahhh, they will find ways to skirt the the new re-sizing. There's always loopholes.

How big does Toskala's cup have to be?

He doesn't need to wear one.

oh, this is dumb. leave the game alone. and if you think a small goalie wont feel it, you are wrong.

Enroth doesn't rock the Lundqvist-esque huge thigh rise, so he shouldn't be affected too much.

Will they let the AHL goalies wear mega pads? If not, would a new call-up need to somehow acquire new custom pads overnight?

Why? His chest protector will still be the size of Texas.

The AHL will adopt the same goalie equipment rules as the NHL.

And to play in an NHL game, a goalie will have to have his gear approved by Kay Whitmore in the NHL league office. If you play in gear that doesn't have Kay seal of approval, you will be fined and/or suspended.

The only people that might get a pass would be an emergency 3rd goalie like the web guy in Washington.

Wow...my thoughts are mixed. On one hand I'm totally in favor of reducing the size and bulk of the goalie equipment to improve the quality and integrity of the game. On the other hand, I'm not sure I like the idea measuring players and assigning them pads...I mean, I wouldn't want the league assigning helmets, skates, sticks and shoulder pads based on player size because I think each player should have room for their own preferences within reason.

Why not just provide goaltender equipment in a few sizes that cannot be modified? If they choose a size that goes beyond a certain height on their body than fine them for a uniform violation like they do in the NFL if your socks are too low or your jersey is untucked.

...she can HURT me.

And, I wish she would. Beat me senseless, for being the filthy dog that I am.

I'll put an ad up on craigslist...might even get a response or two. I'll even provide the goalie pads.
