Is there any way to build a team than around the goalie?

Some thoughts.

Ryan Miller is great side to side, possibly one of the fastest moving laterally, but not so great on point shots because he doesn't cover as much net as some guys. Miller is best served by a shot blocking, aggressive team that can clog those shooting lanes, and maybe gives up an odd man rush every once in a while.

Marty Turco is fantastic, but kind of a rebound machine. He needs defensemen that are good at clearing the puck out, otherwise he's going to get burned on the second third and fourth chances.

Even a team like Detroit that doesn't seem to give a lot of thought to their goaltender. I think we can all agree that Osgood is not a megastar. So Detroit compensates by minimizing the opponents chances to score on him.

Is there anyway to build a successful NHL team without having your goalie be the cornerstone in some form?

osgood sucks. imagine if the red wings had an average goalie. because osgood is no longer a true, NHL calibre starter.

The Washington Capitals last year.

Jose isn't a true starter anymore and Varlamov shouldn't be thrown in quite yet.

It is hard to build a team without any goalie at all. The reason we've been so close in some games was purely because of Miller.

i suppose to answer this we need to more or less determine exactly how much responsibility or weight you can give the goalie before he becomes the "corner stone."

Every successful teams needs to have all of its pieces working in order to be successful, thats a given. but the goalie doesnt need to be the corner stone. Detroit is actually the best example of this. if you look at them from a different point of view from the one originally mentioned then its pretty easy to see (this would apply to New Jersey as well. really it does). With Detroit, their strong point is their defense. there offense is beyond solid but last year they gave up something like 19 shots a game on average. their corner stone is their D. they just need a goalie that can stop most of the 19 shots a game. The goalie for Detroit isnt that important. they just happen to have Osgood. This applies to NJ as well (as we saw last year). yes Brodure is a great goalie. but the defensive prowess of the Devils allow them to use a non-elite, or rookie, goalie and still win.

in all reality, there arent many teams that are built directly around the goalie. yes, the defensive style that teams play will/should, play into the strengths of their goalie but the whole team isnt built around them.

heres an example of a team built around a goalie (IMO).

Goalie-poor lateral movement, decent rebounds, great positioning.
if a team was to build around this they would probably get defenders who might not be great shot blockers but better pass blockers and are good at clearing the puck. they might be more stay at home in order to prevent a break away. Offensively, the team should get strong offensive first players who can make up for the stay at home defense and can catch the d-zone clears and make the fast transition. on this team, it would seem to me that the team would be designed around the goalie.
