Bettman wrong, Fasel says

"[Regarding Bettman]...Fasel, the IIHF's president, also knows this: The Olympics still offer a global reach and penetration otherwise unavailable to the world's biggest hockey league. Sitting in his office in a leafy enclave in downtown Zurich, in fact, Fasel sounds like he's grown weary of Bettman's oft-repeated reservations about the Olympics.

And, on this matter, he's hardly alone in the hockey world.

"He's wrong," Fasel said Tuesday. "He's completely wrong. If you want to bring hockey to new people and new sponsors, you have to use the huge stage of the Winter Olympics. For Torino, we had 14 billion TV viewers (over the course of the 2006 Winter Games). When I see the numbers the NHL reaches on TV, you cannot compare."

One word for you, Mr. Fasel: "Versus". We don't need no stinkin' Olympic exposure...no siree!

I agree with Fasel.

More people in the world will watch the Olympics than an entire 82 games of NHL hockey on TV.

I don't know. I mean I would understand the NHL pulling out if financially it couldn't afford a kid right now.

every olympic games, they focus on a cinderella team with a player who plays awesome for said team who isnt an NHL player...

remember tsyplikov in 06 (i know he was in the NHL, but at the time he was looking for a north american job)... thats only good for the NHL.

The other week, I gave a speech on hockey, and to find sources I searched the Academic OneFile database. There were articles on there from the '90s praising Bettman. Lots of them. I laughed and laughed. Basketball is not hockey.
