So I just read one of the headlines on puck daddy about how Terry Murray (coach of the Kings) was in a tizzy over fans booing the Kings after the 2nd period. They ended up losing that game 4-0 to the Blues after being able to muster only 6 shots over the first 2 periods.
Quote Terry Murray:
Quote:
You know what the most disappointing, frustrating thing was? At the end of the second period, we were booed off the ice by our fans. That is the most embarrassing thing I have ever been through. That's the worst I've ever been through, in all the years I've been coaching. I've been behind the bench almost 3,000 hockey games in the NHL, and booed off the ice by your own fans at the end of the second period, here after this road trip, going 4-0 in hard places, very disappointing.

Now here's my issue. You're professional athletes. Those fans pay their hard earned money to come see you perform and win a game. When you can only manage 6 shots in 40 minutes, I think you should be booed. Now I believe there was a big hoopla with Patty LaLa getting booed after a putrid game against the Wild. I recall Miller chewing out fans for booing him. Maybe I'm missing the point of Murray's quote but I wanted to know what your guys thoughts were on players/coaches being upset with fans for booing.

They don't wanna get booed, don't play uninspired hockey.

If a fan wants to boo their team for them appearing to mail in an effort, then they have every right to do so. Its one thing to lose a game if you've put in everything you had and left your guts on the ice. Sometimes the other team is just the better team and shit happens. However, it's another if you aren't skating, digging in, giving up on plays or just playing like you're going through the motions.

What I don't agree with in some cases, is when some fans take it too far and start shouting personal attacks or tossing garbage at the players thinking they're protected by the comfort of the glass. Not cool.

LA has been playing very well the last six weeks, and just got done with a very impressive 4-0 road trip. Maybe they let down against the Blues, but I'm sure they were a little worn down too. Maybe they expect Kings fans to pay enough attention to hockey to know and understand this stuff, but we probably know better. Kings fans booed because they just saw what was in front of them for the past 40 minutes, with zero perspective. Murray sounds like a whiner, just like his brother in Ottawa, but players are affected by fans. It's human nature.

I think it's assnine too boo the home team NO MATTER WHAT. If you do, then don't EVER refer to yourself as a fanatic or fan for short.

Players will be cheered when they perform well, or at least show effort.

It's when it looks like the players don't care that I advocate booing the home team. We paid our money to see these millionaires play a good game, and if they don't? We have every right to voice our displeasure with what we're seeing.

Being boo'd should be a motivator because without the fans the sport wouldn't be played and you wouldn't be making money as a professional athlete.. At least your fans care enough to boo you off the ice.. that means hey guys get your shit together.. not just have your fans leave without doing anything and go get a beer... make them know you're pissed and maybe if the players care they might want to turn it up a notch.. You never know who is the crowd watching their first game live.. you gotta preform because in my case i wouldn't want that fan to be like well that sucked never going to do that again.

Look, if you can't bring yourself to even show up for the game, don't blame the fans. Yeah, you went 4 and 0 on your road trip. Big friggin' deal. The fans who shelled out good money for the game you're playing now didn't get to see those. Get your act in gear.

Have you ever seen a game where the home team gets booed, but turns things around later in the game? Have you noticed the crowd isn't booing them anymore? In fact, those are probably the times where the crowd is at its most fervent. You want the fans behind you? Do something about it.

Still my all-time favorite hockey chant: "Zero! We want one!"

I understand the idea that fans pay good money to attend a game, and they will boo if they are unhappy with the effort they see on the ice. If the team is playing like absolute garbage and fans are frustrated, then of course fans are going to express their anger.

What I don't like is fans like Habs fans who boo the living hell out of their players mercilessly. I understand having high standards or whatever, but there comes a point where you have to realize, professional athlete and millionaire aside, that they are human beings and being booed on a nightly basis by your own fanbase probably isn't the most beneficial thing to do. You're supposed to be a fan, and that means being supportive of your team through good and bad.

That's not saying that fans should just let terrible effots slide and that it's okay, but some fans need to calm the hell down.

Word. After an effortless period or game, boo. But night in and night out even if the team is doing ok? Lay off JFC.

I think I've only booed the Sabres twice ever. If the team can't put 5 shots on goal in a period and is losing, they deserve to get booed.

It's egocentric. I paid $$$ to watch a hockey game so I DESERVE to see success. I don't care about how well the team has played because it doesn't matter if I didn't see it. It's all about ME and MY personal satisfaction.

I can easily turn the tables and call the booers a bunch of whiners, especially when the team is only down 2-freakin' 0. There's a time a booing, but the, "I paid money" line doesn't mean jack. We all know there will be good games and bad games, and there's no guarantee printed on the ticket. Don't go if you don't want to risk seeing a bad performance. Of course, for some people they can boo over anything for whatever reason they like, because it makes them feel better or relieves some stress from their day - usually the same people throwing f-bombs ten feet from a kid. Quality stuff.

That f-bombs comment reminded me of my walk home last night from the bus stop...some mother at 11 o'clock at night was yelling at her 2 year old daughter to pick something up and repeatedly called her shithead. I wanted to slap her and punch the dad sitting there saying nothing.

Totally agree. It's one thing to get pissed about something and voice your opinion, but you should always be aware of the audience around you. Kids don't need to hear that kind of spew.

Some guy, who works at the grocery store across from my work, had his kids in the mall about 2 weeks ago. They were walking by the gumball machine, stopped and were just looking. Not even asking if they could have the $0.25 to buy something and he just ripped into them right in the mall slinging F-bombs and asking them if they thought he was made out of "God damn money". I've seen him act this way with his kids before and had enough. I asked him if he could please knock off the attitude with the kids and to respect the other shoppers in the mall. He told me to fuck off and mind my own business. I got in his face and very quietly explained to him that I was making it my business and that if he doesn't mind his P's and Q's around his kids and in a public place that child services will be paying him a visit. I also advised him it wouldn't be wise to tell me to fuck off again.

Now when I enter that grocery store, Mr. shopping cart guy avoids me like I have the plague.

Yeah those are awful parents. Unfortunately, they're not uncommon.

I don't like booing my own team. Won't do it.
