Post subject:  Magic/Tragic Number Thread (Update, Post #22)

Every other forum has one, so why not here? I'll update this every day with the post number of where the most recent update is.

New this year is ROW as the first tiebreaker. ROW is (R)regulation (O)vertime (W)ins, which is wins minus shootout wins.

Magic number: points needed until team can no longer fall out of top 8, meaning 1 point more than 9th place's maximum points possible.
Tragic number: points needed by 8th place team that would prevent teams below it from passing it.

Feel free to pick apart my math, but I'm 100% sure I've gotten everything right.

DISCLAIMER: First round of math was performed, checked, and double checked at 5AM. Even though I'm sure RIGHT NOW, I could still be wrong. I'm a tired motherfucker.

I dont understand how Buffalo and Carolina could have the same number, seeing as how we've got the same GP, and are 5 points up on them. Explain?

Sabres Magic Number 10...number of points needed to eclipse Canes' max possible points

Canes Tragic Number 10...number of points 8th spot (Sabres) needs to eclipse Canes' max possible points.

The Canes can still add 14 points for a possible total of 94. How do the Sabres best that? By accumulating 95. So the Sabres' magic number is 10. The reason the Canes' tragic number is 10 is because once the Sabres add that many points to their total, the Canes can no longer pass them and are eliminated.

So teams 1-8 have a magic number a teams 9-15 have a tragic number? Ok I get it.

I know that if Buffalo goes to Carolina up by 5 pts it will be a potential elimination game. It's really a guarantee though, since I will be there waiting outside the Canes locker room with a bat. Specifically my Easton 33" 28 oz. that I once hit .424 with. It provides maximum sweet spot with maximum bat speed, and Cam Ward won't have a chance at stopping it. I could use an accomplice to distract security by streaking through the hall. Whose going to volunteer?

8th place team's magic number = 9th place team's tragic number

EDIT: nevermind, I should read the whole thread before responding.

That's not completely true. They are not necessarily eliminated if the Sabres add 10 points. If the Rangers or Habs add less than 8 points they can still make it. The tragic number is not that important.
We have to look at the magic numbers. As long as there is a team with a magic number the 9th place team is not eliminated.

If Buffalo beats Toronto in regulation it will put them back 9 pts with only five games and a possible ten pts left to earn...effectively eliminating them. I can't wait to hear the crickets and see the empty seats in the 3rd period.

Well, since it's at the ACC, you'll be able to see empty seats and hear toilets flush from the concourse, as soon as the game starts....

...and then in the morning, I'm making waffles!

I'm sure the Leafs fans would love that.

The ACC was loud as all hell last time we were there. An anomaly for sure.

Not that there are not leaf fans...but those seats are too damn expensive.

A sell out doesn't mean the seats are full.

They are but I think what he is trying to say is a lot of those are "suit type fans", the kind that will wear the suit and barely watch the game rather than the rowdy Leafs fans we usually get here at HSBC.

The ACC can go either way. I've seen it loud and quiet depending on the night.

The Leafs fans I know have always said that.
