Um... So they can't toss octopi, but they can toss hats on the ice. I know they are two completely different things but come on.

I disagree, but it seems the list of objects being tossed is growing, which could eventually lead to a bad situation. They are probably trying to halt it before others being fined cry that DET doesn't fine people for the octopi.

So... the NHL is asking that the cops ENFORCE AN EXISTING LAW and people are bent about it?

Ok.

Thought about it some more. My current issue is with the Red Wings themselves. If the city has a law in place that states the throwing of objects on the ice is prohibited, and the league is vocal in their support of this law being enforced, then the Red Wings shouldn't openly encourage the octopus phenomenon.

If it was me, the law wouldn't exist.

So, the entire thing is a crock of shit.

That's where I stand on it. Just because they haven't bothered to enforce the ordinance before now doesn't mean they should catch hell for doing it.

Think about it. A guy gets a lifetime ban from the ACC because he chucked frozen waffles on the ice, but throwing a dead animal on the ice is supposed to be OK just because they've been doing it longer? Maybe waffles would be a revered tradition too if it was going on for 60 years. :P

The only thing that ever should be thrown on the ice, in my humble opinion, is hats. Everything else is just dumb to me.

It's a tradition that's been done for years.

If they're worried about numbers, just have a team official throw the Octopus on the ice every game, rather than the fans.

They still get their tradition, and it doesn't get out of hand.

I would agree with this a little more if Detroit didn't develop an octopus mascot out of the tradition.

I guess it's morally wrong to treat a creature like that but you know if the shoe was on the other foot the octipussies would throw humans onto the ice and nobody would be fined.

the fans are the reason their is a game. let a little originality go. let the 7 panthers fans throw a rat. let the 11 yotes fans throw a snake. let sharks fan throw plastic sharks. and let detroit fans throw RUBBER octopi.

then again, detroit has a bad rep about throwing stuff....

Who's to say that Toronto wouldn't make a waffle mascot in time?

You either let people throw whatever they want, or you don't let anyone throw anything. That's how I see it.

I don't like it when Red Wings fans throw them in opposing arenas.

Well the NHL has a rule about it in the rulebook if anything gets thrown on the ice the home team gets penalized in the game. But it's not like the octopu were thrown during the game. I heard they were thrown before the game and after. Never during.

I remember that happening in 2009 in Buffalo. That was classless. Those fans were cruising for a bruising
