Quote:
The Phoenix Coyotes have traded the negotiation rights of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Matt Clackson, a third-round pick in the 2012 draft, and future considerations.

The deal gives the Flyers an exclusive window to negotiate a new contract with the 30-year-old Russian before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Clackson's contract expires on June 30, meaning Phoenix has the same opportunity to discuss a deal with Clackson before he also becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Bryzgalov went 36-20-10 for the Coyotes last season in 68 games with a 2.48 goals against average and seven shutouts.

He earned $4.5 million last year in the final season of a three-year, $12.75 million deal with Phoenix.

"After several discussions with Ilya and his agent, it became very clear to us that we were not in a position to sign Ilya to a long-term contract," said Coyotes' general manager Don Maloney in a statement. "We will now focus our efforts on adding another goaltender to our roster for the upcoming season."

Bryzgalov has split his seven NHL seasons between Anaheim and Phoenix. He was drafted by the Ducks in the second round of the 2000 entry draft, and played for them until he was claimed off waivers by the Coyotes in November, 2007.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007 as back-up to J-S Giguere, and was named as an NHL second team All-Star in 2009-10.

I really hope they aren't able to work out a deal with him. I've always liked Bryzgalov and I would really hate to see him in a Flyers uniform.

Bryzgalov will likely be seeking some solid money, which is why the Coyotes traded him. He was already making $4+ million, so I can easily see him demanding $6+ million. If Philly manages to work out a deal for him, they're really, really going to have to clear out some cap space, especially if they plan to resign Leino while giving Powe, Carcillo and Nodl new contracts.

Hey cool, another reason to hate the Flyers/ Bryzgalov, not that I needed another one...

If they sign him for 4 or 5 million, they're fucked, so let them do it...

Yikes, but this will make the Flyers even more top heavy.

They're going to need to ditch one of their current contracts in order to afford what is likely a $4M cap hit. Curious to see who they ship out.

Well this is great!

Maybe they'll trade Danny Briere and we can get him for like a 5th round pick because they can't afford him and we can. Then we can trade for Chris Drury, oh boy!!, and it'll be like the good ol' days. We'll win a many Stanley Cup for sure! It'd be wonderful!

Philly is shopping Jeff Carter pretty hard, and I'm sure somebody will take him for picks and prospects. That's exactly the kind of trade Buffalo could be involved with, but I'm not sure he's the player we need and I'd hate to make any trade with Philly.

HAHAHA, they're screwed! Even if they somehow find a way to ditch the contracts of Versteeg and Hartnell, they'll barely be able to fit him under the cap. He wants BIG money. I love this.

It's not that unlikely. Bryzgalov wants around 5 mil per, so all Philly has to do is trade Carter, who they've shopped before anyway, and one of the other back-up goalies. With the cap going up they'll still have room to sign Leino and a few RFAs.

They clearly have to trade [superstar who would never be moved] to accommodate this potential deal.

Obviously Darcy should trade [bag of pucks or slightly used jockstrap] and [prospect that I don't like even though he's good] for [superstar who would never be moved]. If he doesn't [make an unrealistic trade that even NHL 11 would laugh at], then he should be fired.

Not even close. The cap will go up probably around 2 million. If Carter goes out the door, that gives the Flyers just enough to sign Bryz, because he's going to want big money. There's no way Leino resigns, because he wants 3.5 a year, and the Flyers just don't have that.

Uh, yeah...it is close. Whether the cap goes up to 61 mil or 63 mil, it will still be close. Philly can trade Carter and a back-up, sign Leino and all their RFAs and be at 58 mil. Add Bryzgalov and that's 63 mil, but with only 13 forwards, 7 d-men, and 2 goalies. Make one or two other moves to adjust if necessary, but it's still quite possible.

I'd take Carter in a heartbeat. Buffalo has young blueline talent to spare in Butler, Sekera, and Weber (though I'd like to see Weber and Sekera stay and develop) with NHL experience, then TJ Brennan and some others that might be another year or two away.

Carter looks great on paper - a big RH shot center that scores and plays the PP also - and seems exactly like what Buffalo needs. Philly can only take low salary players, picks and/or prospects for him, and that's what Buffalo has with all the RFA and prospect D-men. Maybe even Kassian could be trade bait as a player that fits Philly's style, if his lack of skating and maturity are prevelant enough for Darcy to let him go.

So it seems like the perfect player with the perfect trade partner. But I've heard (maybe incorrectly) that Carter doesn't show enough heart or character and isn't a leader - all things Buffalo also needs. So I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be cranky over getting Carter for Sekera/Butler, Kassian, and a pick.

Bryzgalov might play for a lesser amount seeing that the Flyers would be really really good if they had an actual goaltender. But if Bryz gets the money he wants then Flyers will have to dump salary big time.

Still pretty scary if you look at there team and see Bryz on the backend.

Agreed. It's not a good thing if he ends up on that team, even if they have to drop a Carter or a Hartnell, I think the Flyers come out a stronger team. I just hope that there's some way Buffalo can become a better team out of it as well.

There are a lot of other teams who will try to get a good Philly forward out of this situation via trade. Considering this and the weak UFA market I don't think we will be able to get a great deal for Carter or somebody else.

Food for thought: Jeff Carter has 11 years remaining on his contract.

To Flyers: Butler, Montador, Kassian, 1st round pick 2011
To Sabres: Carter, Coburn

I know this is wishful thinking on my part, but that would net Philly almost $6 million in cap space. The fact that Carter is signed long term is balanced by the fact that Coburn becomes an UFA after next season.
