The Winter Classic isn't a T-ball game where the league is trying to get everyone into the game. It is an NHL promotional event second only to the Stanley Cup, with a focus on expanding the viewership for the league. Nobody is going to tune in to watch Nashville play Winnipeg (no offense to either of those cities or franchises). This is a straight up business decision, so expect to see the Winter Classic limited to big city, big name, marquee teams for the foreseeable future. Buffalo only ranked because of its exceptional television ratings. |

Nashville vs Winnipeg would suck i agree with you but there are other marquee teams besides those located in the Northeast US that could be apart of it and draw people. Montreal @ Colorado (with Colorado wearing Quebec jerseys) would be huge, Dallas @ Minnesota (with Dallas in North Stars attire) would be fun. even if there isnt a "dream match up" for the classic, teams like Tampa, Nashville, LA, Vancouver and Edmonton (in a couple years when the teams average age is over 21) have enough stars/rising stars on their team that they would be a great showcase for the talent of the NHL. |

I think only doing it once should have been enough. It was actually fun to see I the first time, now it is just a gimmick for the NHL to make money. |

Not only would Winnipeg's rabid fans watch the game but most of Canada would too. Nashville and Columbus is a better example. |

Of course Winnipeg fans would watch and maybe many other Canadians would as well. However, since Canada's entire population is less than that of the state of California those kind of numbers aren't going to impress anyone at NBC. I'll stick with my example. |

patkane88 wrote: ...it is just a gimmick for the NHL to make money. Um, the entire league is a "gimmick" to make money. Why do you think professional sports exist? If it is amateur hockey you want there are plenty of outlets. Personally, I am happy the NHL has a popular game and I look forward to watching the Winter Classic every year. It certainly beats watching college football's bowl series (which is nothing more than a professional sport where the players don't get paid). |
