Ryan Johnson of the Canucks tripped over a Detroit player and slammed head/neck first into the boards. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher. I was impressed to see a Detroit player was there checking on him before anyone else. Is it me or does it seem like there has been a rash of these lately. |

well, the only thing i can think of is he tightend up, otherwise the back end would have crumpled over. |

Man, how many times have players been carried off the ice this year? This is nuts. |

This was because he lost an edge and couldn't stop. The Detroit player was just there when it happened so he only did what anyone else would have and been right by the guy first, since he was the closest. I was watching the game, and he hit his upper back lower neck on the boards from that hit. He was moving his legs and such while lying on the ice, and it was no one's fault either. |

It isn't you I watched for along time and honestly, I don't recall this many (questionable) hits in the first (10) games. Not to say I'm not a fan of fighting ala 70's bench brawls, but there is something seriously wrong with the hits we're seeing already this year. |

This wasn't a hit though, he happened to lose an edge and go into the boards and couldn't stop in time. |

These types of things will continue to happen in this league until they pad the boards like a rubber room. Seriously, when will the league take the health of the players seriously? Ham |

No doubt it was just a freak accident but there has been too many players carted of the ice on stretchers lately....whether it was a freak thing (like this) or some one being an ass, too many bad things. As stated earlier, he has a concussion and should be back in the line up in no time. |

My reply earlier (about the rash of injuries) had nothing to do with this injury which was obviously unintentional (just trying to clarify) |

It way MAYDAY. At 2:13 you clearly can see May skating over to him. At 2:41 they announce May's name as first player over, took his gloves off and stick to attend to him. Stuart had a huge knock into the boards in that game also. |

Yeah, that was May, number 24. I saw the replay of that on ESPN down in the cafeteria when I was eating lunch today and checked to see what happened as soon as I got back to my room... The angle they showed it from made it look like he smashed his head into the boards. Glad to see that that wasn't the case, that it was an accident. There have been far too many purposeful incidents like that this season... Every year it gets worse. I don't think things will change until someone is either permanently paralyzed or killed. That was scary. |

If he wasn't wearing a full set of body armor with a special helmet and shield he wouldn't have charged the boards with reckless abandon out of a false sense of security. It's human nature to push the envelope, and when you make people believe they are so protected they can do 80mph around a 35mph turn terrible crashes happen. |

Honestly, i'm really kind of surprised there has never been a death from something like this, or a brutal check into the boards. Hell, had umberger had his head down at a different angle, and soupy had caught him just right R.J could have died from a hit like that, snapped his head back at the right angle to snap his spine, hit the ice wrong, etc etc. True, i've not played ice hockey, especially at NHL speeds...but, it LOOKS like they're going awfully fast, hitting awfully hard, and sometimes being careless with themselves and others. |

I think in Jr. or in some other amature league there was a death. Two guys chasing down an icing and one guy lost his edge, slid headfirst into the boards. That was when Grapes started the rant on the no touch icing. I have to say, I agree with him on that idea. Too many guys have either had concussions from it, broken legs/arms, neck injuries... Hopefully the rest of the league watched this though. Checking to make sure he was ok or even just seeing what he could do in that situation is totally the right thing to do.
