im aware how expansion goes. however. this is just an idea.

say quebec gets an expansion team, scheduled to come into the NHL in 2015-2016. its announced tomorrow.

should quebec get to sponsor a farm system BEFORE That season, and draft players in drafts previous?

i think my idea would allow quebec to draft players in the 2014 draft. last pick of every round. that way they dont get the top prospects, but something to build off. and their AHL affiliate (lets assume its an expansion as well) gets to start play in 2014-2015. establish a farm system. this would allow an expansion NHL team to hit the ground running somewhat, and allow them a slightly quicker route to relevance.

there is nothing behind this. just an idea i had. and i figured it could trigger some fun discussion.

I'd be for that instead of what they did in previous expansions. They could always loan out the players to different AHL/NHL teams for a year too.

Great for the expansion team. Terrible for the rest of the league.

a similar question, would the above be more or less fair than an expansion draft?

i would LOVE to see an expansion draft in the cap era. might see some good players left unprotected.

No. I don't think it's worth it.

Allowing an expansion team into the entry draft before the expansion draft doesn't really help them much. For starters, it's a penalty to the other 30 teams in the league just to let a new team in, even if they're picking 31st. That's effectively the 1st pick of the next round. They're going to get 7 players, and odds are quite high that none of those players would play in the NHL under normal circumstances for at least 3 years.

It's just more talent pool dilution. Something that pro hockey desperately does not need.

Along those same lines, let's say one of the expansion team's picks from their first draft shows up on the new AHL team, and suddenly becomes the AHL version of Gretzky. There is no NHL team for him to get promoted to, so he has to stay in the AHL for another year or two, on an AHL contract, at AHL dollars. That is problematic legally, and it is another example of how it could dilute talent.

i dont disagree with the talent pool dilution one bit. but i think you will see the league jump to 32 teams in the near future. they are already setting up for it, i think, with the leaked conference proposals. looks like seattle and someone else.

I still think some of these cities are nuts to build arenas without commitments, but maybe I'm a minority there.

It's entirely possible that they won't expand, and simply get the franchise fee from jacked up relocation fees down the road. But, knowing the NHL, they'll expand, and hurt the product even further in the name of the almighty dollar.

i may be in the minority as well, but in the salary cap age, an expansion draft does sound fun. youll likely see actual halfway decent players on expansion teams.

but you are correct, to build an arena without a commitment... thats crazy. though, seattle makes sense key arena is so dated, and they want the sonics back.
